Wilba, love your work. New to photography, but an Engineer of 17 years and I can't fault your analysis.
Having read countless statements to the effect that an AF micro adjustment completely solved a given users front-focus condition, for example, I was at a loss to understand how a system that simply has to be closed-loop could possible return a consistently incorrect outcome. Of course, knowing that a lens has a parameter called BFCV, it's all too obvious.
One of the things that makes finding information on this subject so very difficult is that the vast majority of users of this technology don't seem have any scientific/engineering skills. And so, like religion, the real truths of the matter can be completely obscured by the word of the masses. I still have faith that the Internet can survive as a powerful tool of knowledge and wisdom when such scripture as this exists.
