On Samsung explains the Galaxy S5's ISOCELL sensor post (49 comments in total)
In reply to:

Michael Ma: Things that Samsung could do to move smartphone imaging forward.

RAW - This would improve, white balance correction at post, Highlight/Shadow recovery, better denoising options

Manual camera controls
Sometimes we want motion blur. Sometimes we can keep the phone still while snapping a photo with 1 second shutter speed. Let the users decide what we can and can't do.

Lens profiles for Adobe Camera Raw, iPhones have it to correct distortion, vignetting,, etc.

Most phones have fixed aperture so exposure control is very limited.

I like Carl's eyes...

Joe Ogiba: So 15/12 fps is a new video standard ? I guess if you are making a Keystone Cops movie it's ok but I would stick with 1080p60 for any action shots.

Fast speed, not slow-mo.

lightleak: If they make palm sized full frame compacts now, please stop telling me a digital 6x7 slr is totally out of reach and will never happen.

Something like a digital medium format rangefinder (Mamiya 7) would be nice.

tommy leong: "....With its 15mm-equivalent, 110 degree angle of view, it will be the widest-angle rectilinear prime lens for APS-C/DX format SLRs.."

does sigma 8-16mm count as a rectilinear lens?

How come nobody mentioned that Sigma is a zoom lens, not a prime...

RX10 - APS-C three-point zoom lens (28mm f2, 35mm f2.8, 45mm f3.5).

You can find K-5 body-only for around 750€ and 800€ with kit lens (Europe) and I doubt K-30 will be much cheaper.

Where is that 1" sensor with 1.4 lens that every fanboy out there was preaching about?

What about Olympus 9-18mm?

In reply to:

chalnicolas: I wish they would offer their sensor in a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera. Ideally join m43 and become the third company to build bodies for that mount … I guess they could sell a lot and also foster the sales of their own current and future m43 lenses!

Medium format foveon sensor in a rangefinder body sounds nice.

Megapixel war never ended so it can't restart.

Peter KT Lim: Photo quality come from the size of the image sensor, not mega pix.

Pentax K-5 is APS-C and its Sony sensor is in many ways much better than Canons 5DII that is FF.

wilsonlaidlaw: I just hope the lenses are better than the rubbish fitted on the front of recent Kodak digital cameras, to which they put their name. Given their reputation for wonderful large format lenses, I was amazed they were prepared to risk their reputation on these awful plastic blobs.

Sorry, you don't understand. Leica and Zeiss DON'T make point and shoot lenses. Panasonic and Sony make them and buy Leica/Zeiss brand name for marketing reasons. But still, lens has to apply to some standards of those brands.

Leica and Zeiss don't make point and shoot lenses, Panasonic and Sony do.

Iron Mike: a 15 in display with 2880x1800 resolution will make stuff so small it will be very hard to see, including text. The 1080 resolution on my 16 in laptop is bad enough, this will only be worse...

Apple doesn't invest millions creating new displays, they simply buy them.

Direct link | Posted on Jun 11, 2012 at 22:30 UTC

Why didn't they include a cable lock (clamp) for full-sized HDMI out??? Cable can still get pulled out by accident and converters port can still get damaged...

This is ridiculous.

On Dan Chung asks Canon about EOS-1D C at 4K launch article (88 comments in total)
In reply to:

marianco: The price leader for 4K Professional Cameras is Red.

When you price a Red Scarlet 4K camera starter kit, you realize that without lenses, the price starts at $17,000 for the body with battery, LCD screen, etc.

The Red Zoom lenses start at $6000 for a 17-50 mm Zoom.
The Red Prime lenses start at $4250 for the 100 mm lens.

In comparison, Canon's EOS-1D C costs only $15,000. And you can start your lens kit with the $120 50mm prime or the $950 24-105 L Zoom.

Canon is so much less expensive.

You can use Canon lenses on Scarlet.

Scarlet is RAW and has proper video features.

1D C is a dslr with compressed 4k video.
