Here's a thought... get a budget flight to New York for a long weekend, buy the camera, do some early Christmas shopping, a bit of sightseeing. Then pay the VAT man at the airport on return to stay legal. Sure it'll cost a little more, but you'll have a way better time than just meekly hiking over the premium that Jessops et al charge (rob) us here in the UK.
