While my suggestion doesn't address your question, but in order to capture funny faces of your kids, one can shoot short video clips and select the appropriate frame afterwards. Works for...

I think the screw placement as you describe them, "screwed up" your images...
You have such a capable tool with the X100S, why degrade the results?

There are all well composed, but perhaps DR200 would help to keep the highlights in check. But you shot in RAW...? Well, what can I say perhaps your PP is the culprit.

I like your first image, but it appears a little soft with some lack of contrast viewed on my PlayBook. Perhaps you didn't have to massage it as much if you chose f/5.6 and faster shutter...

It seems you are still on the sideline when it comes to the X20. If the X20 is anything like the X10, then you end up with wrong exposure in bright daylight shooting Aperture Priority F/2.0...

You may consider to send your X100S to Fuji for repair, because your metering is totally out of calibration.

Try half-pressing the shutter button to focus, then push AFL/AEL button to lock focus.
You have set up the AFL/AEL button correctly in the menu (on when pressing), but for every shot you must focus...
