On Canon Powershot S110 Preview preview (107 comments in total)
In reply to:

eliedata: My colleagues and I bought 3 S100 cameras about 6 months ago. we were extremely satisfied with the image quality & the matchless convenience.

I used my camera really well travelling to Italy, Sicily, Dubai, Lebanon and other places. I shot about 3000 images and a few short movies.

However, the lens unit on my camera failed about a month ago for no reason at all. The same happened to one of my colleagues camera today even though she hardly used her camera.

Canon should pay more attention to the lens mechanism issue that caused many people to stop buying their products even though the image quality is really good. Reliability is a great issue!!!

I am so reluctant to advise anyone to buy the S110 if there is no assurance that the lens mechanism has been revamped.

At least yours was a happy ending story. Not the same as those who saw their Fujifilm X10 dishing out white orbits followed by the denial from the manufacturer that something was wrong. I understand that a product can have some flaws, but as you said it: No questions asked. They just went to repair it. I'll bank on Canon just by the fact that they CARE.

Really? You, the last Kodachrome to be processed?
I was coming back from the Canyon lands, Arches Park to be exact on my way home to Montreal. I dropped 5 Kodachrome films to be sent for processing on January 25th, at a photo store in Salt Lake City. Since I wasn't to wait the customary 7 days I left my home address written on the envelopes. I received ALL my slides in plastic boxes at my door two weeks later.
The clerk mentioned that there wasn't any more Kodachrome for sale, but that Kodak was still honoring their prepaid Kodachrome.
What? You were there when The Beatles broke up?

Back in the 35mm era I used to have my artillery of SLR to shoot weddings and other contracts too. But the best images I could manage to shoot, and having fun while doing it, was with my little Minolta 110 The yellow one with the underwater casing. Then I bought the Agfa with the little motor drive (what a luxury it was) The last one to add to my 110 collection was the Pentax 110 SLR with interchangeable lenses and motor drive.
Great captions from the iPhone.
Way to show how to use, and not how to flash a tool.

fed2man: Is someone removing posts? This showed up when I posted but has now disappeared.

I posted a note that the Sony RX100, because of its higher resolution than the others, allows quite a lot of cropping before you get to the 10-12mp level. Hence the EFFECTIVE zoom at the telephoto end is much higher than at the 20mp level, and it is this that should be used for comparisons. otherwise you are not comparing apples to apples.

Yes, they do. And if you continue to complaint they will remove you. Any other protest from your part and you will be banned from every camera store in the Tri-state area.

georgec: Panasonic LX7 with a Sony RX100 sensor will be a killer cam.

That's what I did!! I opened both cameras and swapped sensors, then I went and returned the RX100 before the 14 days period. Now I'm going to buy a Nikon Coolpix P7700 and switch LCDs (I hope the store won't notice it when I return the Nikon) THEN... I'll have the best LX7 EVER!!!
Ingenuity saves money, guys.

Cy Cheze: Here's a pitch for the underdog LX7:

The control ring is limited to aperture selection, but it has dedicated wheels for shutter and ND filter. Each ratchets precisely. The RX100 ring lurches about. The LX7 offers time lapse, which the others do not. Its aperture is fastest across the full zoom range. One can suppress digital zoom in video, which one cannot with the Sony. Plus, it is intermitently offered at a $299 price, which is hard to beat. Can the RX100 be worth more than twice that? It too will sell for less when the RX200 (or the Samsung KX100!) draw nigh. But people who elect to spend more money, or get a tatoo, find ingenious ways to be cheerful they did.

I thought they orbited Saturn on the 6th of each month...
Are you sure you have the right data?
