nativetree: Very nice reading. Thank you for pointing it out!
For me, the best single observation from this test is that CaNikon lenses lag behind their sensor developments. Canon's performance is at 55% nyquist limit (maximum theoretical system resolution), Nikon's at 50%. Meanwhile Leica M9 with Leica glass reaches 85%, so does Olympus with their top Zuikos (SHG). Anybody going for 24mpix or 36mpix Canikons will not get an optimal performance until matching lenses come out. But those would need to be either twice the size (see Zuiko digital SHG on the 4/3 sensor) or 4x the price (see Leica FF sensor) of the current models--to reach the 85% efficiency of Leica or Olympus systems.
tkbslc: I think they made it 45mm instead of 50mm, so we wouldn't realize how expensive this is for a 50mm f1.8. Nikon's new FF 50mm f1.8 is $200. Olympus half frame version is $400? Makes perfect sense if you don't think about it.
Extremely shallow DOF argument....It's important for those who love "left-eye-only" sharp portraits. The rest of the world like to see the whole face most of the tiime.
nugat: When I download the update from the fuji link (what a convoluted method!!)and then transfer it to SD card, when the card is in the camera the firmware version shows 1.01 !It's the first update from a month ago and of course the camera doesn't recognize a new update. So no action is taken. (It should be 1.10).Did they botch up the versions or I'm doing something wrong?
On advice from the forum I cleaned up all the old versions of updates (1.01). Put them in trash and that helped.probably the Fuji updates have the same file names whatever the version, so when I downloaded the 1.10 it was recognized as the old 1.01.A quirk in the software supposed to iron out quirks.
I downloaded the new firmware from the link above. It is not marked which version it is (should be (1.10) and at the Fuji site there is no other firmware for X100. It's called "FPUPDATE.DAT" 32.2MB. I downloaded it to my Mac and copied via a card reader to an SD card formatted in X100.The card now shows only this file, same name but bigger--33.9MB.I insert the card into X100, turn the camera on holding "disp/back" and the FIRMWARE UPDATE SCREEN appears. It says VERSION 1.01. After hitting OK the screen says NEW FIRMWARE NOT BE FOUND (sic!). TURN OFF THE CAMERA.I downloaded the same way 1.01 months ago and had no problem upgrading the camera then. Anybody tried to upgrade that way 1.01 to 1.10 and succeeded?
yes, yes, yes, yes?The camera still shows the 1.01 firmware and put out the message " new firmware not be found" (sic!) "turn off the camera"
