Nice shots....I myself had a love - hate relationship with the D5000. I could never get consistent results but when I got a good one it was outstanding.

1) Does the AF system seem to work consistently ....same module as D7000 which had questionable QC to say the least
2) Metering...is it prone to overexposure as D7000

I find the skin tone of the 2nd shot from the D7000 quite nice....I simply see 1/3 stop overexposure.....so the personal preference thing
.....and nothing works better for Nikon RAW than Capture...

Easy fix...shoot RAW and use Capture NX2 & WB issues especially in artificial or mixed lighting can be adjusted very easy to suit.
