  • Submitted a challenge entry Froggie
This small frog measures at most 1.5 inches but can be found amongst leaves because it is a true singer. I love its bright color -- an iridescent yellow-green that can be almost golden, depending on the light.

  • Sure does, but it moves and it ain't the wind! Thanks!

  • Submitted a challenge entry Iguazu.pg
Early morning on a trail in Iguazu Falls, Brazil. The water cascades down in such volumes and strength that the haze creates a ghost-like landscape. Swifts fly all around, daring the water

  • Submitted a challenge entry The human condition
This photo was taken in December 1977 and scanned from paper. I think the camera I had back then (i was just a teenager) was a Yashica something-or-other. It was taken at the London Zoo, and I remember looking at the scene, appreciating the mix of sadness and beauty, and thinking, "The human condition."

  • Submitted a challenge entry monolith in the water
This huge formation juts out of the sea in Avacha Bay, Kamchatka. I can't quite figure out how it came to be, but it's very impressive. Kittiwakes and gulls use it as a rookery

  • Submitted a challenge entry stick insect
I love these insects! They've got to be one of the cleverest tricks in nature, huge and slow but oh so alike a twig most birds and other predators never see them

  • Submitted a challenge entry Butterflies on Bark
I saw them flying, then lost them completely -- and strained to find the two butterflies on the tree trunk, where they virtually disappeared into the bark

  • Submitted a challenge entry Dolphin Gull
I always carry a compact camera (leave the house or hotel without it and you'll be sure to regret it!), and out and about in Ushuaia, Argentina, I found this Dolphin Gull just waiting to be photographed

  • Submitted a challenge entry A not so fiery Tolbachik
Flying over the erupting Tolbachik volcano in Kamchatka, Russia, reminded me why I am completely in awe of volcanoes!

  • Submitted a challenge entry Tolbachik
The opportunity to see Tolbachik (Kamchatka, Russia) erupting close up wasn't something I could pass by. I was lucky enough both to have a crazy helicopter pilot and the volcano expelling magma just as we flew over (yeah, I know!) over it

Two giraffes crossing the savanna at sunset, with the rays of sun parallel to their necks...What are the odds?

  • Submitted a challenge entry Okinawa runway
Watching the islands from the air was fantastic, and this photo of the runway at Naha, Okinawa, was taken a while before landing. The way the aircraft circled afterwards didn't allow me another shot

  • Submitted a challenge entry mangrove
The Cubatão mangrove, in southeastern Brazil, attracts hundreds of tourists each year because of the scenery (aerial roots, fantastic birds and wildlife). I was lucky enough to capture some small fish jumping when I took this shot
