Since Sony discontinued their Minolta-rebadged 24-105 which was not bad but highly sample-variable, imho. I had one which was ok and another one with so much decentering that it was unusable.

SSD won't help here - the amount of data of a RAW file is just a few megs / tens of megs. That amount of stuff is quickly moved around by any hard disk drive. Where you computer suffers is in the...

This is a cool shot!I have the A900 and and found that the AF-C, while not great, is good enough for shooting evolving action. It performs best with a SSM lens, high iso (800-1600) and stopping...

Hello,If you can afford it, the 99 will be the better choice. A full-frame sensor always has a better color rendition and DR than an APS-C sensor of the same technological generation. The...

I think you just need to select local AF and move the AF point off center among available points using the joystick - that's the way it works on other Sony DSLRs/SLTs.

There's always been a very nasty atmosphere for newcomers on this site, for as long as I can remember.
-
You for sure win the nasty sniper price - not a forum attitude you should be proud of, in my book.

Hey, I am me and he is him. I own an A900, he owns an A99. My profile might be new but I've been reading dpreview since 2001, that is to say, long before you knew this even existed. You're that kind...

The OP's not ranting, you are.
-
I'm sure you get used to it indeed - and after all this does not harm too much the overall value that the camera represents. There's just this awkward feeling that the tech should mature a bit more...

I agree, the reverse is actually true!http://artaphot.ch/dslrs/302-aps-c-vs-full-frame-2For a given image viewing/printing size, FF will be sharper than crop because the optical image as captured...

If you buy it then make sure it has been upgraded to firmware 2. The AF is noticeably better with that firmware. If not you can upgrade it yourself, the firmware is floating on the web.
-
The price is very good. Even for everyday life subjects, the 900 is a great upgrade on the 700 because it gives you better sharpness, DR, ISO noise, color when viewed/printed at the same size than...

I don't see the slow startup time of the 99 being a "fake" problem. Sony's usually pretty quick at handling problems reported by users (see A700 noise, A900 release without lens, A77 control dial...

and lose all hope for a decent battery life.Shutter lag is nice but the very long viewfinder blackout pretty much kills this advantage.
-
Yeah, agree with that, that's what I called viewfinder blackout, and it is annoyingly long, as long as the shutter cycle time while it should really be quickly gone. David Kilpatrick...

From my 30mn testing of the A99 the current (firmware 1.0) interface is noticeably slower than the A700/A900. Many aspects (power on, settings update after control dial rotation, menu scrolling,...

Nord, I've read many of your contributions here and they're all in this style: "if you don't do what I do, then you must be a poor photographer".Problem is, this thread is partly on the slow A99...

Actually no need to be grumpy - I most probably WILL buy a 99. The idea here is that there are a few points that keep bugging me: dismal battery life, slow aspects of the interface in areas where...
