Replied in Why even think of defragging an SSD?
agreed; as long as sequential read time is still faster than random read time, I think defragging would help.
if I have to follow a linked list and there are 100 links for 1 block each vs 2...

Replied in ???
I heard the /goo giants/ perform live, once.
quite unremarkable show. the part where they broke the guitars was the high point but the music was average, at best.

Replied in best mirrorless or point n shoot for foodporn shots
why shallow?
what is appealing about blur in food shots?
I don't understand that.
when I shoot food, I open up the shot so that most of it is in focus. easier done with smaller sensors,...

Replied in Finally built my ball head.
also, apes with guns kill people. (there's a heston ref in there, somewhere) ;)
how about some kind of magnetic 'connection' to keep the ball from falling out? I've never seen that and it...

Replied in Care and Feeding of Intel SSD drive please
with internal wear leveling, you can't wear out a sector. sectors are imaginary and are remapped on the fly as the underlying ram wears out.
if the avail list gets too low, then you run into...

Replied in Good news! Photographer compensated by the police
it won't stop until those that break the law (ie, the cops) are relieved of their jobs on any infraction that goes to court where the cop loses.

Replied in Western Digital reboots after Thailand flooding
I've heard this but can't confirm this myself: its been reported that the 2.5" (notebook drive) factories are the ones hit, not the 3.5" drive ones. anyone hear that or have links to show either...

Replied in Care and Feeding of Intel SSD drive please
I'm not an expert, but I have not found anything to suggest trim and SE are at all any different. they both 'reset' the blocks so that they are more efficient to write to (init is a good word for...

Replied in Care and Feeding of Intel SSD drive please
that does not make sense to me, though. trim IS a 'reclaim' of electrical states, its not just writing zeroes to memory or defragging.
either way, electrically resetting ram has the identical...

Replied in Care and Feeding of Intel SSD drive please
secure erase is only needed if your system does not support TRIM. linux (with some effort) and win7 both support TRIM. I don't think macos does yet (?).
trim 'resets' the wear and it does it...

Replied in If Amazon can do it, then why can't you?
