I've owned both the 1.4G (two different copies) and the 1.8G, used both extensively on the D700, D7000, and D800. I sold the 1.4G and I never looked back.

Skin tone looks good on my monitor, try calibrating yours..... I think the expressions are very natural, nice work

The d800 does show an hour-glass symbol, I've seen it a few times when the camera was "thinking" but you're right I haven't seen the symbol in previous models....
