About me:

I am a hiker/traveler first, photographer second. I diligently strive to maintain this order of priority. The whole idea behind my photography is to record images of the places to which I travel and hike for future enjoyment. I use the best camera equipment I can afford in order to record those places with as much clarity as possible. I compose images in a way that captures the scene as I am viewing it but I am free to compose in ways that I feel are interesting too. I am not confined to composing for what may be commercially sellable to clueless consumers. I am continuously trying to sharpen and broaden my skills so that my actions do not counteract the clarity and resolution this fine equipment provides. Turning professional isn’t an option. I am seeking to retire, not begin another career.

Rick Knepper's current gear

Canon EOS 5D Mark III
Canon EOS 6D
Nikon D3X
Resolution is this camera's only con.
My back-up camera for the Caonon kit.
Still is my 2nd highest resolution camera. I'd give it another half star if it were as fast as my 5D3.
Nikon D800E
Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM
Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM
I'd give it 5 stars if it weren't for its slower fps. I understand why it is slower, but it is what it is.
Wish this lens had better infinity performance.
An awesome lens!!
Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM
Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM
Canon Extender EF 1.4x II
Not quite as sharp as the 70-200/2.8 IS II. Probably would have gotten five stars before the 70-200/2.8 IS II and Nikon's 70-200/4 VR releases. Time for a Ver. II.
No extender deserves better than 3 1/2 stars
Canon TS-E 17mm f/4L
Carl Zeiss Distagon T* 2,8/25
Carl Zeiss Distagon T* 2/28
Anyone who has worked with the previous verions of Canon's TS-E lenses can appreciate the expanded functionality of this lens in allowing tilt and shift at 90 degree angles or parallel without sending it to Canon for the adjustment. I think the corners are slightly soft, certainly light years ahead of the corner performance of their L primes before this lens' release, but still, have to ding it for this.
ZF, Nikon mount. I use this lens on the D3x and D800E exclusively. Not Zeiss' shiniest moment.
ZF, Nikon mount. I use this lens on the D3x and D800E exclusively. Noticeable field curvature but otherwise a super sharp lens.
Carl Zeiss Distagon T* 2/35
Carl Zeiss Distagon T* 3,5/18
Carl Zeiss Makro-Planar T* 2/50
ZF, Nikon mount. Originally adapted to EOS but use the lens exclusively with the D3x these days. A great all-roiund lens.
ZF, Nikon mount. Originally adapted to EOS but use the lens exclusively with the D3x and D800E these days. Some folks find the lens soft along the edges. I've never gotten anything but keeper images when I didn't screw something up.
ZF, Nikon mount. Originally adapted to EOS but use the lens exclusively with the D3x and D800E these days. A little soft in the corners but I simply love the color this lens produces.
Kenko Teleplus Pro 300 AF 2.0x
Nikon AF-S Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8G ED
Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8G ED
DGX No extender deserves better than 3 1/2 stars.
Truly awesome for such a wide angle zoom.
This was my premiere 24-70mm range lens until Canon released the 24-70 II. Even with the resolution of the D800E, I prefer the 5D3/24-70 II (a personal choice that may not be made by the next guy). When I am using the 5D3 and another lens outside of this range, the 24-70G is perfectly capable of providing unbelievable images.
Other gear:
  • Canon Speedlite 550EX Flash
  • Contax Carl Zeiss Distagon T* 21mm f2.8 Adapted for the EOS mount.
  • Leica Elmarit-R 28mm f2.8 (E55) Adapted for the EOS mount.

Rick Knepper's previous gear

Canon EOS 5D
Canon EOS 5D Mark II
Canon EOS 300D (EOS Digital Rebel / EOS Kiss Digital)
Sold this camera after buying a 2nd 5D mkII
At one time, I carried two 5D mark IIs until I replaced one with a Nikon D3x and I replaced the 2nd with a 5D mark III
Still have it only because it is virtually unsellable. Makes a good camera for my gal when she wants a little better IQ than her compact and iphone.
Nikon D700
Canon EF 24mm f/1.4L II USM
Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L USM
Returned the D700 & 14-24G to Amazon after two weeks when, during evaluation, Canon announced the 21 MP 5D mkII.
Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L USM
Canon EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM
Canon EF 135mm f/2.0L USM
Canon EF 200mm f/2.8L II USM
Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6
Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L USM
See notes for the Rebel 300D
Sold this lens to reduce weight in my backpack. Bought the lighter 17-40L in its place.
Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM
Canon EF 17-40mm f/4.0L USM
Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM
Bought this lens to replace the original 16-35 in order to trim weight in my backpack. The 17-40 was lighter but the IQ was not comparable. Sold it after buying and evaluating the 16-35 II.
Owned two copies over the years. Sold the first copy to lighten the weight in my backpack. Sold the 2nd copy because I was convinced a 24-70 II was about to be released - 1 1/2 years ago. :)
Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM
Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM
Canon Extender EF 2x II
Sold this beast to reduce weight in the backpack.
Sold after buying and evaluating the 100L version.
Sold this item when I sold the 16-35, 24-70 & 70-200 f2.8 IS to cut down on the weight.
Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM
After 5 years, it was time to let go. Maybe the 24-105 II will get me back onboard.
Other gear:
  • Canon EF 24mm f/1.4L USM Returned to B&H due to poor corner performance.
  • Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L USM Returned 2 copies to B&H for back focus issues unrelated to the focus shift dilemma. This was pre-Microadjustment.
  • Canon EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 IS Not a very good lens on a FF camera. Sold it.
  • Canon TS-E 24mm f/3.5L Sold this lens with the intention of replacing it with ver II. Haven't done so as of this writing.
  • Carl Zeiss Distagon T* 2,8/25 Returned this first copy to B&H, which I adapted to EOS, because it had strange out of focus areas which I blamed on the adapter. I decided I would revisit the lens at a later date.
  • Carl Zeiss Distagon T* 2/28 Returned this first copy to B&H, which I adapted to EOS, because I was put off by the strong field curvature but the lens was so sharp that I decided I would revisit the lens at a later date.
  • Contax Carl Zeiss Distagon T* 28mm f2.8 After buying the Leica 28mm R, this lens paled in comparison. Sold it.
  • Contax Carl Zeiss Planar T* 50mm f1.7 Sold it. My worst performing 50mm lens.
  • Contax Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* 35-70mm f3.4 Sold it. One of the best Contax lenses I owned, 2nd only to the Zeiss 21mm in terms of IQ. Just had too many really decent options in this range so I opted for lenses that could provide both AF & MF focusing.
  • Leica Elmarit-R 35mm f2.8 (E55) Having several choices at 35mm, I decided to sell this lens.
  • Nikon AF-S Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8G ED Returned this copy along with the D700 when, during evaluation, Canon announced the 5D mkII.
  • Olympus H.Zuiko OM 24mm f2.8 Returned two copies of this discontinued lens to KEH. Both were bad copies.
  • Olympus OM 24mm f2 Zuiko Bought this lens from KEH after returning two 24mm f2.8 lenses that were bad copies. Excellent lens but I reached a point where I had too many lenses in this FOV so I sold it.
  • Olympus Zuiko 21mm f2 Returned to seller at Fred Miranda. Terrible IQ, most likely, a bad copy.
  • Sigma 14mm f2.8 EX Aspherical Pretty terrible IQ. Returned it to B&H.
