Favorite photography: Landscapes, cityscapes, historical sites -- 'spirit of place' & 'communities of memory' fascinate me. Macro: Flowers & plants for color, shape & texture.
You have my solemn promise never to shoot an engagement party, a wedding or a graduation ceremony. A funeral, maybe -- if it's my own.
Photos included in several shows; some photos have even sold (I was as surprised as anyone).

Interests outside photography: Cats, dogs, canoes & books.
Special obsession with US history from founding era through the Civil War. Also a bit with fur trade history & far north exploration.
Enjoy local political agitation as participant and spectator.

PhD in political science, University of Iowa
MA in recreation education, University of Iowa (this one finally got me a job)

Informal education:
The assembly line, the street, the rink, the locker room, the US Army (1970-1973) -- along with rivers, mountains, lakes & the woods.

Born in Harvey, IL -- a lot longer ago than I'm going to admit. Lived in Illinois, Pennsylvania, Germany, Illinois again, Pennsylvania again, Germany again, Iowa, Virginia, Minnesota, Idaho, North Carolina, and Illinois again again. (If you count the Army, add Missouri, California, North Carolina, New Jersey & Germany.)

Where I'd like to be: Somewhere in the Minnesota North Woods or along the Continental Divide between Montana and Idaho.

Fantasy career 1: Playing center in the National Hockey League.
