i wish for 400/4 or even 5.6. i don't think any zoom can match prime.

the sigma ca do a lot more than tha Nikon can dream of

it is a small and light lens. You ca just use your camera plate.

for birds,if you can afford it, go for it.

I have both tcs  1.7x and 2x. They give the same iQ, sharpness onn my 400/2.8 VR.  The 1.7x is a bit easier to spot the birds, but with some practice, both work well.
