On Tamron develops 16-300mm F3.5-6.3 superzoom for APS-C SLRs news story (211 comments in total)
In reply to:

pulsar123: Minimum aperture f/40 (I guess at the longer end)? Wow. Why would they do that? Crop sensor, f/40 aperture means totally blurred photo, probably like from a cheapest cellphone. Even f/22 is way too small for crop sensor: anything smaller than f/16 results in unacceptably soft photos (due to diffraction effects; this has nothing to do with the quality of the optics).

Any superzoom I looked at had some very disappointing shortcomings in the image quality department. (During optical design, one has to sacrifice IQ a lot to get to that huge zoom range.) Let's see if Tamron will surprise us with this new lens. If the IQ is reasonable (comparable to cheap kit lenses, like 18-55mm) across the whole focal length range, this could become The travel lens for crop shooters.

You sound like someone who just reads lens reviews and MTF charts.

On Samsung launches daul-grip, 60x WB2200F superzoom with Wi-Fi news story (203 comments in total)

People who think the portrait grip is unecessary might want to try shooting with a 1200mm lens first.

mpgxsvcd: They literally put junk in a bigger body thinking that everyone will see it as a full frame camera. They are probably right. Most people will think that this is a pro camera when it is not.

This is a dumb comment.

The camera has a legitimate use - the dual grip is necessary for longer focal lengths if you're shooting in a portrait composition anyway.

Oh unless you're saying that an average consumer doesn't need 1200mm because they didn't buy the right to take photos like that. Like you.

vladimir vanek: Oh yeah, Samsung, of course! For those who want to look like a pro and argue who has more megapixels... I would write the max. zoom with even bigger numbers on the lens and so that it is visible when holding the camera by any of the grips. Oh, and what about putting something like "DUAL GRIP" on the box? See? There are couple of marketing flaws to be updated...

Try shooting a portrait shot on a 1200mm lens with a normal grip in less than ideal shooting conditions.

utomo99: Come on Samsung. Try to make camera to beat Sony Rx 100.
With big sensor, fast lens and small body.
And people will be happy

Enthusiasts that make up a small proportion of sales will be happy*

ManuelVilardeMacedo: It is certainly a great camera, of course, but I wish I could unsee the picture of the silver version. I know looks are not that important, but that thing is ugly and the lens makes it look ludicrous.

I think it looks nice... :(

Robbie Corrigan: Looks like K-3 has just put Pentax on the top step of the APS-C podium. Time to retire my faithful K-5.

The K-5 is already on the top step :P

cam shooter: It is refreshing to see Pentax finally entered year 2013. A little late to the game, but they might now be able to competed with the d7100.

Also its amazing to see your disregard for facts. Pentax is one of the other brands apart from nikon/canon that supports USB tethering.

So in what way is the D7100 a 2013 camera?

The sensor, body, performance, isn't '2013'. Everything about it is off-the-shelf.

igor_s: How often would you shoot at f1.8@18mm on APS-C or f2.8@24mm on FF? Strongest vignetting and aberrations, and what subject? On the longer end you can have prime 30mm f1.4 for half the price. Superior optical quality? Will see.

A lot.

Bend over, mr conventionalist.

Pik2004: Does anyone know when Samsung will come up with new sensor? the current sensors is over 4 yrs old. How will they keep up with competition?
their lens line up looks pretty good, but not camera.

The NX300's sensor is new, the NX210/20's were also new, and the NX200's sensor is not even two years old yet.

I believe you meant: "Does anyone know when Canon will come up with a new sensor?" All they do with that 18mpx sensor is worsen its performance every iteration by increasing the noise reduction.

thx1138: As far as Samsung phones go, it is well known Samsung violates the open source licenses and releases broken, or incomplete source code that nees massive work by devs to compile using other sources to get a functional OS. Those that own a Galaxy SIII will now all about Samsung's lack of support for the dev community which has seen huge number abandon the platform for Sony. I wonder how complete this source code is for the cameras.

Come again...?

Pretty sure the development community of Samsung's/HTCs is far larger than Sony's. Also afaik modding a sony has a risk of bricking.

Why dont they just make a mirroless D3x00 with on sensor phase like the V2 and the same aesthetic?

Much less R&D, much easier engineering, and each camera would be cheaper. The V2 isn't even small anymore....

Old Ed: Has anyone else noticed that there is STILL no "portrait prime" for DX, THIRTEEN YEARS into the format??? Please forgive me if I don't get excited that one has been announced for the "m43 wannabe" format.

The 50mm f1.8G is a great, cheap, portrait prime.

Come again?
