  • Out now the 35/1.4 Distagon, a big surprise so far - very close to FE55 level, and very nice in other major respects; the 28/2 is also pleasing many buyers, and only ~$450; the 90mm we need to be ...
  • Two very different lenses. One a dedicated portrait lens with a narrow gamut of usage. Sony is gambling that the new macro will be the one for most users. On weight - it is amazing how a lens feels ...
  • I can empathise with both 35mm and the FE55, since I travel every few months and use an RX1 and a7r. It will come down to your proportions of total shots devoted to each of the main categories: ...
  • Replied in size and price
Most serious photographers will tolerate a little more weight/bulk if the lens really delivers the goods. The extra weight fades from memory when you see the images it produces. Looking at the ...
  • Replied in All good advice
except - personal opinion - DRO. The histo is your best friend, and if you get consistent U/E dial it into your EC control. Problem solved, invoice is in the mail. ;-) These things are usually user ...
  • Some folks are still coming to terms with the fact that mirrorless does not equal puny small sensors in tiny bodies, to be seen as adjuncts to real cameras. No one needs to 'push' any camera ...
  • I was looking through Steve McCurry's work recently and found that his images show severely blocked up color and a much reduced dynamic range, from what we see from the modern Sonys. It's almost ...
  • Replied in 90mm macro
rav, MTF charts from calc sources still indicate the fundamental behaviour of the lens. Experienced lens geeks know what to look for in each of the lp data. Sony's QA is where Zeiss comes in for ...
  • Read Paulo's comment. If still puzzled in a years time, Google is your friend. No shortage of lens reviews and background explanatory materials for inquiring minds, all on the web, to be found in ...
  • Replied in FE55
  • "Zeiss lenses just do it for me. They might not be the "sharpest" lenses in the world in terms of absolute ultimate resolution (although they ain't chopped liver in that department either), but ...
  • Replied in Facts
24 > 36 = 22% extra sensor MTF 36 > 50 = 18% more sensor MTF More resolution matters for all images via more tonal accuracy, color fidelity, gradation depiction, clarity - for a richer, deeper, ...
  • Take a statistical approach to the question. Say you are a photographer with 20 years experience, use good technique, know post processing quite well, and your level of photographic ability ...
  • Sony did some smart things in the new 28/2. First, they used a lot of special glass - design over final glass quality if you will. Then, the two converters for users who prefer that approach for ...
  • Replied in hear Nasse
Thanks Robert for the info re Dr Nasse; what he does not know about optics is not worth knowing. For others here is a link; and for the ADHD, a summary as well: http://mikepasini.com/corners/2014/1 ...
  • Replied in some background
The FE55 is not a Zeiss designed or manufactured lens, though it carries T coatings and has Zeiss oversight regarding QA and tolerance control - this comes directly from the designer of the Sony FE55.
  • Replied in It depends!
Hank has it covered, read his stuff. Best to buy the best of the golden oldies, if you can, and if you like manual focus - and of course many of the better modern lenses are MF. Same with modern ...
  • It's a fast moving field and so CZ are to be congratulated - the others much less so. I wish I could access the images referenced in MTF II.
  • Replied in a hard one!
Bag carrying, nancy boy, off brand lenses that will barely work, both on a lower res body; or custom SOA wide zoom on the best sensor out there - a hard choice that one is. ;-)
  • I want to see Sony make several more super primes in FE, and to encourage CZ to do the same in Loxia. They have the a7r and perhaps a 50Mp coming. These are not entry level bodies, and not all ...
