Yes, if you make up a word and use it as part of your profession, then your pronunciation is right. All the laymen who don't use it everyday are wrong.

People who speak other languages can call it whatever they want. That has no bearing on what the English pronunciation is.

There's no sense, its just convention. Back in the day you used "jay-pegs" and "jifs", it rolled off the tongue easy, so that's just how it was.

Ever since the internet existed, I've always called it "jif". Its a handy format for small graphics where you need transparency.
