When Sigma have a workable image stabilizing system to overcome the camera shake issue that you will get with this lens, the next...

Th D7100 also have a pretty decent writing speed to the card. So a 95mb/s card helps a lot. And use compressed raw. I use 14 bits because of the better dynamics it gives.

I don't think you are right in your conclusion.
Your test simply revealed the 80-400 to not be the right lens for the job. For shooting on long distance you need lenses with higher glass...
-
Yes it make sense to use a prime lens. The zoom lens has more lenses inside and is normally not as exact as a prime because of all the elements inside that in addition are moveable and should be...
-
The 80-400 is not a lens for long distance I think. And a 5x zoom with converter is not a good choice. Try to avoid combination zoom/converter.
For these type of pictures a prime lens, say...

-This is of course a blackcap male, which indeed has a beautiful song.
Use of active D-lighting, high and EV+1,5 would do. Even shadow/higlight at 30 in PS could help. Neat Image to reduce evt....

Very good Pete!
I am glad somebody else like you also did this test! I think your test is very close to mine as concerns CA.
I can see some CA in your other pictures though, and understand you...

How would YOU decide CA and glass quality on long distance pics in backlight then? See original post.

It disturbes me that nobody seems to do a test like the one I did. Close-ups in good light don't really tell much.
So test your new AFS 80-400 for cromatic abberation. Then you can tell how good...

Taken yesterday, Single point AF, center spot, AF-C.
Do not only look at the first comparison I made. Also the landscape picture revealed CA with the new AFS Nikon 80-400.
I'd say the Sigma has...

Thank you Jane
I can find a similar situation, use the tripod and do all settings right for better comparison between the Sigma 150-500 and the Nikkor 500mm AF-S f4. It is already clear to me that...

Can you give links to the reviews? Was it on long distance and challenging the CA situations? Then you can evaluate the quality of the glass better.
(Remember, settings were in principle the same...

The Scott Kelby ishockey shoting is a completely different use than mine. I would only use the lens on the longest end, normally on long distance, where distance is the bottleneck. Therefore I...

Thank you for your analysis! I agree with you. In ANY case, the Sigma proved to be good enough to a fraction of the Nikon price. The extra reach and the good IQ of the Sigma didn't make it...

I have all the big prime Nikon lenses, so take it easy! And I had the old 80-400 and wanted to switch to the new AF-S. But I thought it must be of incredible quality to deserve the hefty price...
-
The problem is that your pictures hardly say anything about the new AF-S 80-400 IQ. That is because they are all taken in good contrast light, and on close distance. To be able to challenge the...

Thank you Al
It is the AF-S version, i.e. the new one with built-in silent-wave motor.

I have wondered myself, but think it is because the magnification (about 400%) here is far beyond "noise" values!
I therefore post first the original 80-400 pigeon picture. Note that this already...
