wakaba: So it sucks and sticking tailfins (WiFi and strange sensor) on that Olds is not going to make it better.

Canon is dead, check the data on dxo, 30-100% worse than a D600.

DXO isn't everything

CyberAngel: How many Android Phones have OIS?
I would really like to see a video comparison between these and
Lumia 920, 925, 928, 1020 (,1520)

from what I heard the OIS on androids only do up to 3 stops, whereas Nokia's are 4 stops

About the 4K video, so when you watch on the phone is still display as FHD? And only if you can afford one of those expensive 4KTV or Sony's flagship projector there's no way you can actually see how good the video quality is?

btw, I know is not relevant to this artice but will DP get a hands on the Xiaomi 3(aka L920 running Android lol), it's capable of taking RAW files which interested me.

On Microsoft to acquire Nokia's smartphone business post (68 comments in total)
In reply to:

Sonyshine: Since when did two turkeys make an apple?

I feel sorry for Nokia - OK they sitting in a mess of their own making but most of us have fond memoies of our first Nokia smartphone - unlike Microsoft where our early memories are of slow computers constantly crashing and the Blue Screen of Death.

I fear this will end in tears for all concerned.

but now when i'm using Microsoft's Windows 8 i'm not crashing or getting blue screens anymore, those blue screen days are properly last seen on XP...I rather have better "now" than good old past.

Hope WP getting more apps, then i'll happily switch to Nokia-blood Microsoft phones XD (that sounds wierd

FreedomLover: The only reason not to have optional optical image stabilisation (OIS) in the body is to make more money with lenses.

Canon, like Nikon, is systematically selling cameras purposely crippled at every level.

Really good, uncrippled cameras that are made with all the best technology available, like the OMD-EM5 and the RX100 are selling like hot cakes, so crippling is not necessary for marketing reasons, it is just done out of pure greed, and the results are showing.

No wonder disappointed brand fans are fighting each other like hooligans in bad football matches here.

If you want beautiful skin tones without yellow-green banding, buy Pentax or Olympus instead.

OMD and RX100 are with much smaller sensor is that crippling too?

Don't forget OMD at start are expensive as mid-range APS-C DSLR, and RX100 is slightly more expensive than entry mirrorless/DSLR....

Njphoto1: The new sensor certainly has an impressive spec with the dual pixel Af and is an good advancement in technology. Thank you canon for trying to push the sensor tech once again after so many years; but has it come to late and is it enough to hold back the competition? Personally i would have preferred canon to focus on more dynamic range and colour depth as well as the new on chip Af. can't have everything though right...

Anyway, i have to disagree with this comment - "It really takes DSLR shooting and filmmaking to a whole new level." It does for canon but overall, not really when comparing it to other manufactures... take Sony for instance; back in 2010 Sony created a camera that has full time Af even in video mode with TMT (for their slr style cameras) and still is known for having the best LV performance even in their mirrorless range (their evf still needs working on but that's another story).

Shame to say it but canon you seem to be a couple of years behind everyone else. Give us something to really shout about!

And no one complains Nikon's haven't change for years too?

Why Canon's EOS M isn't in this, its street price is pretty low...plus the firmware update makes it much more useable

HeyItsJoel: Wow. I'm liking this new camera. Question: is this the same sensor in all the other APS-C bodies in the last 2-3 years? (T3, T3i, 7D, 60D, T4i, etc...) I understand that Canon has been recycling the same sensor.

Well, they(Canon) said is a new one...

the physical aperture hole of a MF lens is much larger than 35mm's, numbers on the spec sheet isn't everything...

Sarge_: This camera changes nothing; Nikon makes the best DSLRs, and Canon makes the best compacts, with Sony leading the 'tween' market with the NEX... With respect to IQ, that is.

SLR includes medium format, so you ignored Leica, Hasselblad and Pentax e.t.c
And be honest Canon also makes excellent DSLRs as well....

As a P300 user who just brought P300 just before P310 released, I'm glad I brought this rather than the P310 because the sensor has no improvement (except pixels). And after I read this review I'm sure I didn't made a mistake. (btw I can't believe the P310 has less good optics, this seems the the in the S95 and S100 situation as well)
Looking forward to see how the RX100 do.

TTran510: I'm a Canon shooter but if the rumor of D600 specs and price are correct, I'm switching over to Nikon. The D600 and the new 24-85mm VR + a 50mm 1.8g would be perfect for my needs.

And Canon probably will have one as well, I think it's better to wait after photokina....

photofan1986: Just compared the studio samples with those from the G1X, and while I can only compare Jpegs at the moment, it's really disappointing to notice that the G1X, while boasting a smaller sensor, has much cleaner high ISO.
Seems like Canon really used just updated (for focusing) old tech (almost 4 years old) in their SLR lineup.
Maybe they don't want to kill the next 70D or 8D, which will probably benefit from new technology. Ah, marketing!

And that's becoz the smaller pixel and stronger NR, I rather have a bit more detail than mushy...

Anirban Banerjee: Samsung makes good cameras spoiled by the wrong choice of lens mount :-(

I think the lens mount are ok, just there's is no big aperture zoom lens around, a 16-55/2.8 and 50-150/2.8 would attract lots of users.

AndreasG: To all the people complaining about the "slow lens" of the G1X:
Please show me a zoom lens that
- covers a m4/3- or larger sensor
- has a a zoom range, which is as versatile as the G1X's (3x or preferably 4x zoom range starting at wide angle)
- is faster than the G1X's lens
- is as compact as the G1X's lens
(- and of course costs less than a G1X ;) )

Isn't the last three points is GX1?
