Borrow or rent a TC and try it.
I think that you will find that the IQ is degraded by the TC to the point that cropping to the same image size will give you similar results w/o the loss of f stop...
If Canon technology is so primitive compared to Sony , Fuji and Nikon, why do we see most professionals using either Canon or Nikon ?
Alot of "white" lenses along the sidelines using "primitive"...
Very nice !
We have been fortunate to have this visitor near a shopping center in Moscow, Idaho since 10 December.
He/she has been reducing the mouse/vole population very...
This may be getting more complicated than need be.
I shoot in RAW with all in camera settings, sharpness, contrast, saturation, etc, turned off.
I process in DPP for contrast, saturation, color...
This has been said many times before but, buy the family of lenses that is best for your needs.
Cameras bodies are computers and change often, lenses last forever.
Unless the subject bird is moving, use "One Shot" instead of AF Servo.
With AF Servo, if you move center spot off the subject it will search for refocus.
"One Shot" will lock on if you half press...
I found the same results w/ 50D.
Cropped to the same image size, there is little difference in IQ, so there is no up side to losing a full f stop and having poor AF.
Afraid the answer to your...
I shoot mostly birds and use the 400mL 90-95% of the time.
With birds I rarely find it to be too long.
It is occasionally a problem with dragonflies/butterflies in having a too long MFD
I also have...
This lens continues to please and surprise.
The above photo is way out of my usual comfort zone ( bird photography w/400mmL f5.6) and...
After you sell your Canon lenses and switch to Nikon, what might you do in 6-8 months when the new 7DII comes out with slightly improved IQ re: your Nikon D7100 ?
'Image Quality" would be hard to define, and therefore to test.
At what range of ISOs ?
If in RAW, how does one compare PP ?
Some viewers like more contrast and saturation than...
I'm in the same position, but have decided to wait for the mythical 7D II.
Primarily a bird photographer, I crop most everything and the 18MP of the 60d and 7D were not enough to tempt me. If the...
Anyone w/experience trading them in on Amazon or B & H ?
The current 400mmL f5.6 has established that there is a market for a $1100-1300 lens suitable for birders.
The next step up in the Canon line up for birders is the 500mm L f4.0 IS...
90% of my use is birds.
Have been using a 400mmL f5.6 since 2005 on Canon 350D, 30D and 50D and will likely on a 7D II.
I would not upgrade to a new 400mm for IS or improved MFD, both of which...
For me , coming from a 50D, the need to buy SD cards and new batteries adds a couple of 100$ to the price.
For those of us still in the "Stone Age", what is the advantage to Sd over Cf cards?
I have a 50D with:
Canon 28mm f1.8
Canon 85mm f1.8
Canon 200mm L f2.8
Canon 400mm L f5.6
I also have a Canon EF-S 17-55mm IS f2.8 and recently, a Canon 70-200mm L IS f4.0.
Both of these lenses have...
Currently use a 50D w/ 400mm L f5.6 for my primary purpose-bird photography.
When the 60D came out, it was not a big enough jump in capabilities to make a move.
The 7D offers better focussing, but...
This will put me , and others, in a bit of a dilemma.
As a bird photographer, I want a crop sensor.
The 20.2 MP sensor is enough of a leap up from my 50D ( 15MP) that I can go for the 70D, but I...
In the EXIF, you show in camera settings for sharpness, contrast and saturation at 0.
Unless you do some post processing, you will not get acceptable results with these settings.
Check with your...
