A scanner designed for transaperent material will us IR to detect on slides and remove the dark spots from the images
This referred to as ICE and is well worth having

That's the problem here. You could just get a refund but you'll never find another D40 so you want a free sensor clean. Live with it, clean it yourself or pay for a clean

I apologise for my comment. All the best the X100 has a much better single focal length IMHO

The wider one. Every day and twice on Sunday. I use to have a compact that only went as wide as that 24 will be. Found it very constraining. The other is a fx lens that might have a dx role if you...

In reality not much
At base iso my D70 produced 12 by 18 inch prints of landscapes with plenty of contrast in the scene. The odd scene beat it but not many. That's shooting RAW of course. Many were...

My wife has made the excellent point that composing on a screen is not so great once you need reading glasses. A simple tunnel is way better than screen that too blurred to see

It sounds like a brilliant trip
I'm not great on lenses so I'll leave that bit for the moment
I think how you are travelling will have a big impact here. If you are carrying all your stuff for...

I hope I'm wrong

Any way the 2 colour ones are lots (12) 30 second exposures stacked in photo shop. So that with a 10 stop nd even at dusk. The B&W is either .5 seconds...
