You've just got to use M mode if that's what you want to do. I don't know why it behaves this way, and it is a bit annoying, but at least there is that work around.

Seems to me that I'll be waiting a bit longer until I can truly leave my camera at home for day-to-day shots. I will continue to carry my well loved Canon A570 IS with me wherever I go.

@highwave: There's nothing wrong with the RX100's lens. It, like the Canon G1 X, doesn't focus well at that close distance so they seem soft, however, real world results are much better.

The new G does very well compared to the competition. I was expecting a greater difference between the RX100 and the G, but that's not what I'm seeing.

I had the XZ-1 for about a year, and while I loved the lens' sharpness and wide aperture I was never pleased with photo quality above ISO 400, it looked more like a watercolor painting than a photo...

I actually enjoy the comments section. I've learned some new facts and gained perspectives I didn't have before.

I agree, my SD850 IS took much cleaner images at low ISO speeds than the newer compact models. As such, I've stayed away from compacts completely, except for a waterproof model, which is only good...

So happy about the auto ISO maximum setting. The 7D is way too happy to use ISO 3200.
