The top half of the picture is where I see all the Action.
Pull out all the stops. make the right side sky a bit darker & the left lighter
Might have been a good subject for an HDR too...

I too thought the first image was better than the final.
Possibly selecting different areas of the shot and
lightening them up a bit might have been a better strategy.
