Thought it was pretty sharp at f2.8 all the way through, very compact . I've had the Tamron. poor corners at 24mm even stepped down; very inconsistent AF.
-
From the reviews I've seen on the internet, I would assume the lens would suck. However, having tried it in store, I was impressed. The sample I tried was good wide open from 24 to 70mm.

The border quality at 24mm was not acceptable... The focus was also not very unreliable / inconsistent.

Had this lens on the D700, and found it way too heavy. During the day I prefer to use something lighter and more versatile like the 24-120 VR. In low light, f2.8 sin't bright enough. I would skip...

I had the Tamron with the D800... it's a good lens for portraits, as center sharpness is good form f2.8, but focusing was very inconsistent on my copy... which caused me to return it. Corner...

that I can't get with the f1.8
This is with the sigma:

Crowing about? The Sigma actually tested as having higher central sharpness at equivalent apertures in comparison with the 85 1.8 G... it's softer in the corners... I have never really noticed it...

I'm getting it used locally, through kijiji. It doesn't happen all the time, but I've seen used copies of this lens for that price.

The new Tamron is 1499 before taxes... I've seen the VR II go for as little as 1700. In fact, I am getting one at that price tomorrow. With he price difference so small, I think VR II is the better...
-
Other than the weight... the Sigma has nicer colors and superior/more pleasing OOF rendering. I do really like the weight of the G, but other than being sharp it's nothing special otherwise...

This never happened in any of the shots I posted... as the red square shows, it didn't move to the eyeglasses frame... and again, af-c is supposed to compensate for MY movement as well. I could...

No, it wasn't set to" focus" only. It was set to "focus release" (see your quote below - "if a camera has never achieved a single focus lock in FOCUS RELEASE mode..." You stated that in the...

That's not how ifocus-release works on my camera... I am pointing it at a blank wall and no focus lock is achieved (it's hunting). however I'm still able to trip the shutter...
