  • Submitted a challenge entry Moonset Over Daffodil Fields
The daffodil fields in Skagit Valley, Washington, are not nearly as popular as the tulips that bloom a few weeks later. Here, seen almost edge-on, are two daffodil fields, rather subdued, and dominated by the poplar trees, hill, and moon in the background.

  • Submitted a challenge entry Total Lunar Eclipse over Seattle
This image shows the first half of the total lunar eclipse in the early morning hours of December 10, 2011.

The fully eclipsed moon appears reddish because the Earth's atmosphere refracts (bends) sunlight into the the Earth's shadow, thereby allowing the sun to indirectly illuminate the totally eclipsed moon. At the same time, the Earth's atmosphere preferentially scatters the shorter wavelengths of sunlight (i.e. the blues), and thus more of the red light gets through.

  • Well, the falls themselves were fairly attractive, but their immediate surroundings were rather dull, actually. Sometimes there's only so much one can do to bring an image to life. Glad you like my ...
  • Thanks. You are exactly correct about the 1/40 sec shutter speed. However, I think you were misled by the EXIF data, which displays the 1/40 sec shutter speed but can't know (as noted in some of ...
  • I think you were misled by the EXIF data, which shows a shutter speed of 1/40 sec. As noted in some of my earlier replies, this image is a composite of seven 1/40 sec exposures, producing a water ...
  • Thanks, Will. I appreciate your being interested enough to take the time to suggest some alternate approaches. There was no filter involved. This is a composite of 7 short-exposure frames. Mike
  • Thanks for the kind comments. As you say, there is a lot of subjectivity involved.  The alternate suggested crops by previous posters is a case in point. Mike
  • There is no HDR processing here, but I see what you mean. As for blending the 7 images, they are brought into Photoshop as a seven-layer stack. The opacity of each layer is progressively decreased ...
  • Thank you, Jim, and thanks to all for your various comments, they are helpful. Yes, I was constrained in where I could place the camera for this shot. I really wanted to get much closer to the log, ...
  • positive or negative. I will comment later on (if anyone is interested) on how it was captured and processed, but for now I would be interested in anything anyone would care to say about it. ...

  • Thanks. I guess I just like photographing old mechanical stuff. Post-processing consists mostly of compositing the multiple frames that are required for each finished image (focus stacking), etc. ...
  • Thank you, Michael. Yes, the phone is moved around in order to produce the effect of a larger source. Mike http://www.photo21.org/
  • Thanks, Andrew. Actually, I had only two oil cans. Although they're not uncommon items, where could I get some more on short notice? So I made my own, using empty plastic soda pop bottles, some ...
  • Thank you very much, Bob. Those are very gracious words. Mike http://www.photo21.org/
  • Created discussions Oil for the Panasonic G6
Except for the background, the lighting for this still life was provided entirely by the screen of my cellphone.  Panasonic G6 w/Lumix 45-150mm lens @53mm. Mike http://www.photo21.org/ Still Life ...

  • Except for the background, the objects in the image (including the crate) were photographed one-at-a-time (sometimes multiple times and focus-stacked), and each was illuminated by a small. ...
  • I don't have that particular problem with my copy of the camera, but I can tell you that the lens hood for the kit lens was so tight and required so much force to get it on and off the lens I was ...
