fantastic shot! did you have to do trial and error to light the foreground?

great shot! how did you get the foreground and the rock so well lit, and how did you use a shutter speed so short?

britties: Congratulations Steven for your beautiful photo!

Regarding your question, infrared radiation (light) isn't absorbed as much as visible light by smoke, clouds, fog and similar particles in the atmosphere. It is therefore able to penetrate these "obstacles" and reach the sensor of your camera. This is why you are able to see behind clouds, smoke and so on with an infrared camera.

thanks!

I was speaking a ways back with an accomplished professional photographer who mentioned that he had never been satisfied with a downstream shot. I wish he could see this one. Absolutely lovely! Congratulations!

also el: one of my favorites. i did a bit of research on lightning trigger after reading your notes this morning. i'd love to try that as i end up spending so much time waiting for the camera to process a long exposure and always 'just miss' the good ones.

thanks! I love using it. Also works well with fireworks....

that's an awesome picture, with two different white balances! Look at the lightning in the water vs the lights in the water...very cool...

I thought this was a perfect shot! Gave it a 5, would have been proud to have come in behind it. Foreground, mid, and distant interest is so hard to do with wide angle, but when you hit it, it's outstanding!

Thank you all very much! I agree that the hdr is a bit overdone, still working on that. Again, thanks!

the bear clearly prefers Nikon, however this does clearly demonstrate that the D4's ergonomics are flawed; clearly it needs an additional battery grip for those of us with unusually large paws (I mean fingers)....
