SeeRoy: There's always a market, in rich societies obsessed with status, for products that actually feature reduced functionality and increased prices in exchange for the promise of some subtle cachet which will attach to the purchaser. This usually happens in markets which are becoming saturated with feature-rich examples of the commodity in question. Of course this effect is always short-lived - and usually unsatisfying - which means that the exercise can be repeated regularly with minor variations. So now we have these throwback cameras with fixed prime lenses and optional add-on viewfinders. The laughable prices actually enhance their desirability in just the same way that high-priced mechanical wristwatches which offer nothing functionally superior to inexpensive quartz models, continue to sell. And there's Leica of course, from whom Sony have obviously learned something. But the most important characteristic of the camera is still what it's pointed at.
RX1 offers a top class class FF sensor and fast, quality glass. You dont want bulk? You can live with a fixed 35mm field of view? The only game in town is the RX1. Buy it and rejoice in it's excellence. The cost will soon be forgotten. And in ten or twenty years time when you revisit and print those elastic RX1 RAW files of your grandchildren, you will still be gald you bought it way back then.
stevens37y: 1 fix lense for 3000+ EUR. Crap movie mode. I think they will sell it only to those guys who are attracted by the price tag.
Just because all digital cams now do video it does not mean that all users want video. I want a still camera for stills and the compact RX1 delivers big time.
Scott Birch: Impressive, but pointless. I wonder what kind of pictures will be taken with it. Do you think they'll justify the leap from APS-C to FF in a compact?
Scott Birch said, "I wonder what kind of pictures will be taken with it.???"
Wonder no more. http://rx1files.tumblr.com/
the reason: you have to be a special brand of stupid to pay this much for that
@the reason. You are just another one who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing.Read the reviews. See the results. This camera is very special.
There are now enough copies of the RX1 in the hands of genuine users that surely we can dispense with the tiresome ignorance, conjecture and uninformed negativity of those who will never even handle one. Please, get a life. Go and annoy someone else.
the reason: So let me get this straight...If I wanted this camera with the evf, the lens hood, a carrying case, and a (needed) 2 stop nd filter Id need 3900$? And some of you are ok with this??!! That borders on brain damage.Anything you have to compare with a leica M to justify it is ridiculously overpriced to begin with.I dont care if your 30 year old rollei only did 1/500 of a sec, I care that its 2012 and you wanna charge me that much for 1/2000 of a sec.It amazes me how hard some of you are trying to justify this thing...
You want justification? Just wait a couple of weeks till the reviewers get hold of it and show what it can do. A quality lens custom matched to a state of the art 24mp sensor in a compact body?My bet is that the results will make the asking seem more than reasonable when compared with any other FF camera. If its not for you, fair enough. If you have too much money invested elsewhere or if you just cant afford it, too bad.If it delivers, its my next camera.
Photography forums are already awash with comments about what this camera does not have rather than seeing it for the jewel that it is. I totally get this camera. For twenty years I used an OM1 with a 50mm prime on it and never missed not having other lenses. For me the viewfinder is not an issue. Buy the OVF and leave it on the camera. You can mount an external flash via a bracket attached to the tripod socket. The camera is not cheap but you will pay as much if not more to get any camera body with a FF sensor and a lens to rival the one on the RX 1 It does quality HD video too. There is no reason to doubt that IQ will rival or even surpass that of say a Canon 5D Mk111. Pro quality video and stills from a compact camera light and small enough to put in a jacket pocket. So why does everyone seem surprised by the price? This will be the perfect complement to my current Alpha DSLR kit.Just need a few months to save the asking!
