I did the update. No difference in quality at iso 80 when peeping at the pixels. In the usual Samsung fashion the new firmware description was rather vague, just "Other bugs fixed".

Same here with raw format, I've been using it constantly since I learned about the benefits, never looked back. And those blue, cold tones drove me crazy in the past. Good thing it's easy...

I like them a lot and have to say the raw files are very easy to work with. Auto white balance works ok most of the time but setting it manually is of course better.

I don't know about stacking lenses, probably a bad idea. If you want more magnification you simply add more extension tubes between the lens and the camera. Bellows can be used instead of the tubes...

I use a 40D, 100mm macro and a homemade holder. Even this old camera makes good scans.A D600 with a dedicated macro lens should be awesome. Probably better than most scanners.
