Opinion: Fantastic small camera. All the manual controls could be disconcerting for a beginner. But as someone who is perpetually searching for a compact that almost gives the user the full control possibilities of an SLR without the bulk, I am delighted! Good for beginners too if they want to learn about photographic possibilities. The true wideangle is eons more useful than a superzoom to 400 mm + if you are not permanently on safari. The 8 mP combined with the superb detail resolution allow you to easily achieve more tele effect by cropping the image.
Advantages of the S80 over my previous and still beloved S45 are:
-28 mm lens
-Big screen. How can it be so good with only 115k pixels?
-Again the screen. The useful angle of view is so broad it is almost like having a folding screen.
-So much faster in every respect.
-Even smaller.
-More direct controls.
-Have never felt I needed RAW.
Problems: -For a man with big and not very dainty hands it is hard to grab the thing without resetting something with my thumb. No big deal, it trains my motoric reflexes.
-Like an earlier reviewer I am a bit colourblind and was amazed that I could not spot the change on the battery loader. I stuck a bit of red translucent tape over the diode. When it is orange I see a brilliant red colour. When it turns green, the red tape cancels out the green and the diode seems dark grey. No problem.
