Commented on Olympus OM-D E-M5 Preview preview
For those wondering the lighting is about EV 6 (brightly lit home at night) from the shutter/aperture/ISO on the photos. It would be nice if dpreview specified the EV100 value for the lighting in...

Commented on Sigma shows latest products at Focus on Imaging news story
The dial around the shutter button is an interesting idea that might appear on more cameras. It's a lot easier to get to than the dial on the back. The Olympus OM-D E-M5 does the same thing with an...

Commented on Sigma shows latest products at Focus on Imaging news story
Why not an interchangeable lens? Lots of reasons: leaf shutter is quieter and smaller than focal plane shutter; no lens mount you can optimize optics back distance; no lens mount...

Replied in EX1 new firmware?
Thanks guys.
So they changed some hardware AND they changed the firmware update procedure (or rather the form the firmware is in).
I can see why they did the latter: it makes it more...

Replied in EX1 new firmware?
If you look at the size of EX1-IC-S1-110181 it's about 80MB which is about the same size as all the files in the previous updates. So it probably contains the previous pair of bins (for the OIS),...

Commented on Photographer LaChapelle can sue Rihanna over 'copycat' video news story
Nice catch. So is it parody (protected?). Or just copying the same (similar?) elements from Warhol's prints of Monroe? Or is the case irony? Or is it for the money? The Estate of Warhol will be...

Replied in a way to learn how to use samsung raw converter/silkypix well?
It seems not. They have the Japanese manual as a PDF but not the English version
e.g. looking for just PDFs on their...

Replied in Samsung EX1 TL500 zoom steps
Thanks for posting that, Bill.
It saved me some work as I'd intended to figure that out (after working out how to preset manual focus for street documentary photography). I'd noticed that they...

Created thread Samsung EX1 TL500 zoom steps
I noticed that the Samsung EX1 zoom didn't seem as continuous as some other compact camera zooms that I've used. Especially at that wide end with a big step from 24mm wide to the next widest...

Replied in EX1 - The OIS Ver 2.0 puzzle
Yes, the camera doesn't care about version (date) it just takes what's presented and will flash them again.
Including wanting to flash the same version of the OS that already exists on the...

Commented on Apple releases Aperture v3.2 news story
That's pretty much the standard work around for unsupported cameras on Mac OS X. I use it with my Samsung EX1/TL500. Ironic considering Adobe LR is the major competitor of Aperture :) That LR UI...

Commented on Apple releases Aperture v3.2 news story
Raw support is in Mac OS X these days so changes come with the release of a Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update not a new version of Aperture to support new cameras. Interesting that they...

Replied in Is NEF + JPG a good idea?
Got it. We're in agreement.

Replied in A RAW converter question, maybe?
Many don't but after a lens correction you can export TIFF then import that to Aperture and resume your normal workflow.
I've not tried it but it should work.

Replied in EX1 - The OIS Ver 2.0 puzzle
There are plenty of OIS 2.0 EX1's out there.
The question is did you start with an OIS 1.0 and then after a firmware upgrade saw it changed to OIS 2.0. If so which firmware upgrade.
Given the...

Replied in much faster....Way too slow
Interesting result. See mine above. It's not actually faster than the sandisk extreme III 30Mbytes card (assuming were measuring the same time ... see my comment above ... from the end of the burst...

Replied in A RAW converter question, maybe?
Probably better asked in Samsung Talk.
The camera does distortion correction in camera for JPEGs but if you follow the Adobe DNG convertor into Aperture (as I do too!) Aperture doesn't do lens...

Replied in EX1 - The OIS Ver 2.0 puzzle
My (Samys) TL500 purchase (which I now think must have been NOS from Samsung or someone going out of business) came with *005065* and OIS 1.0. So perhaps a May 2010 build date?
And like yours...

Replied in Raw speed and Thom's reviews
If you read Thoms other reviews of similar cameras he thinks the 80% coverage OVFs are useless on all of them.
As with all reviewers you read them to calibrate them with your own "settings". Why...

he said:
I'd realized before that the Nikon P7000 product design was a mixture of copying the Canon...
