It is not a bad idea to get the Canon EOS-M as a second camera. I plan to get one to use it when I don't feel like carrying my Canon 5D and its heavy zoom lenses. You already have the Nikon lenses....

I believe that the f5.9 is the minimum (widest) at the full zoom of 1200mm, but does not mean you can't go to f8 or f11.
