Replied in Really, perhaps you could tell me a about
It's true (and I said that above), but I didn't do too bad with a zoom, and it sure beat trying to "zoom with my feet" with my 85mm...

Replied in primes are zooms
VERY ineffective on moon shots.

Replied in I like zooms too
However, I have four primes and three zooms.
There are, in my opinion, two very good reasons to get prime lenses:
- They are available in focal lengths that zooms don't cover (I have a 15mm...

Replied in I like the D20 straight away...
There's not a thing wrong with that image.
I posted a comparison with what I think are the same sensors as in the D10 and D20, taken at 1 stop different...

Remember the cleaner image is the higher ISO image.

Replied in Canon Powershot D20 - Ridiculous Design
Let me tell you why I'm less than convinced of that - low-light.
Once you get down a ways (and 10 meters is plenty for this), you start to need strobes pretty badly unless you like dark blue...

Replied in In my view, Canon screwed up!
Doubt it - the 17-55/2.8 is quite excellent optically.

Replied in Canon Powershot D20 - Ridiculous Design
Sort of.
I bought my Elph 500HS partly because it's f/2 at the wide end. But it's f/5.9 at the long end which is a drag.
But when I really need aperture, I shoot with my 5D and 35/1.4L or...

Replied in An article DPReview REALLY should write, in my opinion
I'm talking about the lens test system, not the camera test system.
I don't want to know about either the camera or the lens, but about the testing process.

Replied in Canon Powershot D20 - Ridiculous Design
I would never buy a D10. I will buy a D20.
The lens bulge on the D10 is a killer for pocketability, and that's one way in which I plan to use it.

Created thread An article DPReview REALLY should write, in my opinion
Here's what you need to do, in my view.
Pick two Nikon lenses - a super-sharp prime and a soft-ish zoom that overlap in focal length.
Shoot lens test charts with them both at the same focal...

Replied in In my view, Canon screwed up!
The reason I think you could have discontinued the entirety of the 20-28 2.8 primes are:
16-35/2.8
24-70/2.8
17-55/2.8 IS
17-40/4
24-105/4 IS
With so many options, that many people...

Replied in I have good news for you two...
It's always difficult to know what is real texture and what it noise. The right way to do this (and I didn't do it either) is to shoot a reference shot with a good camera at a low ISO (I'll do...

You've got to be kidding. Look at the arrows.

Look more carefully - much of the real wood grain shown in the right image is a blurry mess in the left image, and much of the "texture" in the left image is actually noise.

Replied in Frankly - so what?
In which case I don't need a fast lens.
Right, but in such cases where subject blur is a big problem, I tend to use my 35/1.4L or 85/1.8.
But what? The 17-55 has it. The new Tamron has...

Replied in Disagree
I've shot with IS on my 24-105 at as slow at 1-second handheld. I can consistently shoot at 1/8th at 70mm. If I'm shooting at 1/8th with IS at ISO 1600, you might need 1/60th at ISO 12,800...
