Everytime you add a filter to your lens you increase the possibility of lens flare, I rely on the lens hood for protection. In the film days it wasn't so much of an issue as film was not as "shiny"...

thanks both, yes have reformatted the card, interestingly i just tried it on my MacBook Pro and works fine so I suspect it's a issue with the iMac - I will also try plugging the card reader...
