Actually, the viewfinder in my Canon 7D, a crop camera, is noticeably brighter than that in my K-5 -- both the image and the viewfinder info are clearer. This surprised me the other afternoon when...

I have the K-5 and K-5IIs. The autofocus is improved on the IIs in poor light, but I don't think they've really turned it into a birding camera.
If that's what you're looking for, you probably...

Hi Jakop,
Interesting question for me personally, as I bought a 24-inch printer (a used 7600) a couple years ago and occasionally still wish I'd held out for a 44-inch 9600.
Forgive me if I'm...

OK, that was a fun surprise to see my own name in the subject line of a thread.
Thanks for the kind words.

Optical slave sync? Is that a PC plug?

Mateo's advice is quite excellent.

I have been wanting to shoot more wildlife, and Pentax just isn't quite there without considerable compromise. No 400mm lens, no 1.4 converter, no quick autofocus.
Still owning a Canon 100-400L...

If what you're planning to specialize in is portraits, you'd be rather better off with a 5D or 1Ds of any vintage. You could even save quite a bit of money by getting the original model of either...

According to an online DoF calculator, the depth of field on a 50mm lens at f/1.4 focused on an object at 5 feet away is a hair over 2 inches.

Just a couple small suggestions. Ignore freely:
1. Buy used. KEH is a great source. Save money, get more gear.
2. Not sure why you would choose a 50mm for your one fast lens. In the old days...

Ned,
Enjoy that LX. That's a camera body I could never quite imagine being without. Even as mush as I like shooting with the K-5, there is something very special about the LX... its viewfinder, its...

All I want:
400/5.6 DA*
1.4 TC
Much better AF tracking in a 24 mp K5-like body
That's simple enough.

Rod,
That's interesting. I've been thinking for a while that my ideal version of full frame would be small and mirrorless. We need a FF K-02.

For an interesting comparison of image quality between similar 24-meg FF and crop cameras (D600 and D7100) take a look at this.
In comparing the two cameras, he finds virtually identical color and...

Spend more money if you must, but for what you're shooting the 7D or any of the full frame Canons are considerable overkill in terms of features and price. Look at a 60D or a T4i with a 10-22 zoom.

I've made a couple short books with Blurb through LR4 and am very impressed. The process is easy and fairly intuitive and the quality of the books is fine. I'm thinking of, at least, doing an...

A fullframe Pentax would be interesting and even nice but is hardly necessary given the image quality you can get from the K-5.
What keeps me thinking of other systems is Pentax's lack of support...

The K-5 (original version) body-only is going for $721 right now on Amazon. That's a heck of a deal. The D7000, by comparison, is $896.
I'd say some flavor of K-5 is a pretty future-proof camera...

Keep in mind that a bargain-condition K20d at KEH is $245, including a six-month warranty.

The 20D is a great, even classic, camera. Use it forever if you can. One of the best features is they are so cheap now, you don't have to worry about breaking them.
The only real challenge they...
