What better surface for taking a tintype photo than a salvaged tin can?

Photographer David Emitt Adams has taken a uniquely historical approach to photography with his "Conversations with History" series of images. He's using an incredibly old technique (wet-plate collodion) on old objects (tin cans found in Arizon desert) as a way of commenting on the history of photography and the region.

Adams is a native to Arizona, and looked to create a dialogue about the history of photography in the area, as well as the impact of humans on the once empty desert. In his artist's statement, he said:

While there is currently only one GIFTY camera in the world (at Jiho Jang's room), it would be completely awesome if someone took this concept and made it a reality. But right now, this fresh camera is the a one of a kind brain child of Jiho Jang as part of his college thesis.

GIFTY is a fun (or toy) camera that snaps short animated GIFs and then prints them on Zink inkless paper (kinda like the Polaroid Z2300 in-camera printer). The paper is then cut into a small flip-book that animates just like an animated Gif. Actually it is way, way cooler.

<cough, cough> anyone mentioned kickstarter..?

As I prepare to head of for Australia in just a few days to teach a PODAS workshop aboard ship on the northwest coast it seems appropriate that I publish a new article by an excellent Australian photographer, Nick Rains.

It is titled Medium Format Aerial Photography and describes his use of a Leica S2 for this work. It should be mentioned that if you find yourself in Solms, Germany during the next month, Nick has an exhibit of his aerial work at the Leica Factory Gallery.

If you're in Sydney next week, and would like to say "Hi", you might want to visit the L&P Digital IQ2 World Tour event on Wednesday, May 29. Art Wolfe, Thomas Knoll, Kevin Raber, Peter Eastway, Tony Hewett, Alexia Sinclair, myself and other well known photographers will be there speaking as well as engaging in Q&A sessions.
