Another tip is to stop down, the AF doesn't have to work as hard to keep the bird in focus.

The 850/900 got a upgrade to use the 500f4; I'm assuming the protocols for the new 300 and 70/400 are the same.

Probably has to do with the reds being much more active than the Pacific (aggressive also). Fishing on the Deschutes last week, I came across 4 pacifics, all still pretty cold and lethargic.

The boke can be busy compared to my 300 2.8, but what isn't? The 70/400 can't be beaten for 400. A wildlife lens uses the zoom for getting to 400. The ovf is better for birds in flight because...

Owning the super sharp Sony; I think Nikon shooters will be very happy with the new 80/400. It measures up nicely. I still have a problem with dxo testing data though.

The only downside for Sony shooters is a brand dilution. Sony has had a problem defining a product, sticking with it, and improving upon it. Using Tamron (sony largest shareholder), in house...
