On photo 2004.07.25 10-43-48 in the Lakes challenge (1 comment in total)

This picture pleased me more than others showing perhaps more technical expertise and of more spectacular scenes. It reflects the peace and tranquility of my favourite places.

A dull picture, in every sense. I really don't think much could have been done with the subject; perhaps better to have left it? Please don't take my criticism amiss, you have better work in your galleries.

Technically a good shot, but such a hackneyed composition.

Of course, there's always somebody who's given the eventual winner a 0.5. On the very rare occasions where I give any entry this mark, I feel obliged to justify my action.

tangka: "No pooh coming from a bum"
Animal bum ok?

Yes, a doctor must become inured to the unpleasantness of dealing with disease, injury, etc, but does this wholly override your reaction to gratuitous filth? If I see animal faeces in a field, that doesn't worry me; if I see dogshit on the pavement, I'm angered against those who let their animals defecate where children might become soiled. I could see the point of photographs of "poop" used, say, in a magazine to arouse the determination to deal with such anti-social behaviour. That would be legitimate use of instinctive disgust towards a valid end; not so in competitions intended to enhance one's pleasure in photography.

I found most of the entries in this challenge disappointingly unimaginative. This was one of the few that stood out for me, and would have been my tip to win. A satisfying composition, making good use of B&W.

If you have fantasies about punching people just because you don't like their faces, you need help. This challenge ought to be withdrawn.

This made me smile - are these referred to as corn dollies in your neck of the woods?

On article Book Review: Linda McCartney, a Life in Photographs (24 comments in total)
In reply to:

mrosin: Sheesh, what a snotty review. We get it, you don't like Paul McCartney. But how is that relevant to this book? Based on what you wrote in this review, I don't like you much either but I wouldn't make that the centerpiece of a review of your photography. And for your information, McCartney's 1970 debut album was just reissued this year and got good to great reviews across the music industry, from Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, and other music critics. So why make comments about something you clearly know nothing about.

I'm glad you finally educated yourself about Linda's work. It's a shame you had to stoop to such petty remarks about her husband.

As Doctor Johnson remarked, Barney: "Every man has a right to utter what he thinks truth, and every other man has a right to knock him down for it." Yes, this was presented as a book review, on a photography web site, but you included gratuitous remarks decrying the character and much of the music of one of the World's most popular entertainers. So it's hardly surprising Macca's fans feel justified in knocking you down!

Well, I didn't win, but I picked the winner! I can almost hear this loco pounding along...

LX93: A splendid image, no matter what those who don't appreciate the sacrifices made for their freedom might say. I would've given it a 4.5, only because I never give out a 5!

I don't think it was the intention of anyone who quibbled about the interpretation of the title of the challenge to denigrate those who fly in defence of their country. RAF WWII bomber pilots often humorously referred to themselves as "bus drivers". None of us took their modesty at face value.

I usually make a note of my favourite amongst others images in those challenges I enter. This composition caught my eye because of its boldness and deceptive simplicity. The figure and bicycle are perfectly placed.

It may just be my colour perception (so I won't give it a 0.5), but there doesnt seem to be any green in this picture.

Turbo Hampster: Hey guys thanks for the kind words very much appreciated!

I can kind of see what you mean that it might not be considered transport by some, as a fighter plane is designed to fight aswell as being a method of transport. But the challenge rules said a picture of a car, train, boat, plane, bicycle or any form of transport...
So in my interpretation of the rules this image fits, but each to his own if people didn't think it did they are entitled to give me a 0.5.

It's certainly a striking image; the artistic unsharpness adding to the impact and defying the "sharpness is all" type of critic. I don't agree that it can be described as "transport"; a fighter plane is designed to fight: it's the weapon that a fighter pilot straps on for the purpose. But, I've had pictures given 0.5s by others who disagreed about the interpretation of ambiguities in the rules, and I don't resent that. Your picture is obviously outstanding enough to succeed despite these doubts, and I wouldn't like to have missed it!
