Began in photography working as my high school's photographer + working in my high school darkroom during 6th period. All black and white photography. My high school owned an old, heavy, Mamiya Sekor all manual 35mm camera and a very small, one person, darkroom. Many pictures in my high school annual shot and developed with that old camera and developed (film and paper) in that darkroom. I learned about tone, grain, exposure, depth of field, lenses...and much more. Built a pinhole camera for my physics project my last year in high school. I am forever in debt to my high school principal who offered me the chance to become the "high school photographer" and "darkroom technician".
Considered photography as a career, but, chose Chemical Engineering instead. After receiving my paycheck in my first Chemical Engineering summer job, I bought a Canon AE-1. As an engineer, ended up in signal processing and control but continued in Photography as an employee at Eastman Kodak working evenings in their free color darkrooms.
Later, returned to school at Rochester Institute of Technology for Color Image Processing MS, and, in a near miraculous stroke of "luck" managed to transition to a full time color imaging software development role. The latter career, which I remain in, enables me to work with image capture, image processing, color gamut mapping and processing, algorithm and math, and, sometimes, photography.
I use photoshop CS6 and Matlab with the photoshop plugin that enables Matlab code to be processed within pshop environment.
