My D800 has excelent and fast AF :-)
D800, af-s 28mm 1.8 nano, af-s 50mm 1.8 & af-s 85mm 1.8
I am going to Gaithersburg next month with this :-), business but a few days off.
Maybe I will leave one of these at home, I need to travel...
Could it be the lens contacts ?
Sometimes taking the lens of and put it on again solves an AF problem.
I would try clean these.
Kept the D300, uses it once in a while, but mostly D800 with 85mm 1.8, but also the 50mm and 28mm - mostly with primes - very satisfied.
Manual focus very easy and good - this was never really...
I have Nikon AFS 28mm 1.8, AFS 50mm 1.8 adn AFS 85mm 1.8
I mostly use 85mm for everything outdoor.
It is an amasing lens.
If I only had one it sure would be this on.
By the way the nano coating on...
Could be the lens contacts.
Both clean he lens and the cameras contacts.
Or as I have found myself doing a few times.
After focusing turned the manual focus ring unattentionaly, resulting in...
Maybe due to different Flange to Focal-plane distance.
If the lens is optimized for Canon it might not be as good on Nikon.
Maybe it is easier to make lenses for the shorter...
It is correct, it is due to the Fresnel lens in the viewfinder only accepts light from a narrow angle.
D300 is a fine DSLR
D800 is what I remember my old SLR were - but when I look at the film they ain't as I remembered them.
D800 IS WOW
Try clean the contactson the lens and maybe in the camera.
It has often solved the problem for me.
It is a very good lens !
I have seen no issues with this lens, the reviews in photozone.de seems valid. AF is precise and fast.
D800 manual focus also works perfect for me.
The Nano coating works...
Since you say you constantly having focus problems. and main concern is that it's not consistent.
I would certanly clean the contect on camara and lenses, i might very well be these.
I did go from D300 to D800, and kept my D300 with 16-85mm for general use.
For the D800 I bought the 3 new 1.8 primes. (28, 50 and 85mm)
I mostly use the 85mm.
I works like a dream.
Have you tried cleaning the contact on the lens and in the camera ?
;-)Why not a prime 28mm f1.8 Nanocoated - it matches the 18mm on DX
I bought the 35mm 1.8 DX - I almost never use it.
I eventually bought the 50mm 1.8 FX, - same price, and I use it a lot more.
For me I found that the 50mm was more interesting on the DX than the 35mm
I also hesitated with FX - but eventually bought the D800.
I still have my D300, and I think I will keep it for a long time.
I really appriciated that Nikon did not let it down but gave us the new...
Nikon Denmark states that there is several improvements in the new FW, without being specific.
I think that AF has been improved with my 16-85mm.
Shoot raw - NX2 can handle it in one shoot.
Just use the exposure compensation in quick fix menu
