I bought one a couple of months ago in Bangkok - no issues.
The once numerous threads on the left-AF issue have died out - I assume Nikon have quietly sorted out the problem.

Don't count on it.
My bet is an APS-C with a (slow) fixed 2.5x or 3x zoom. That lens wouldn't need to be very big.

There was one made in the UK a long time ago (by a sub-division of ILFORD I think) - it might be able to be adapted to take a digital camera on the back.

Highest rated by whom? Do you want a 3x, 5x or 10x zoom? How compact is "compact" ~ does it need to fit in your coat pocket, or your shirt pocket?

Have a look at the section Detail and Moiré K-5 II vs. K-5 IIS in the recent DPR review of the Pentax K5 II and K5 IIs. These cameras have the same pixel density as the D800 / D800E.

I'm not sure what the focus problem you are having is - I don't find a particular problem with the D800 and flighty subjects.
I'd suggest the best thing to do might be to rent a D3X for a few days...

I wonder just how many large prints you would need to be making on a regular basis to justify the cost of a good large format printer, inks, and paper -, as well as the investment in time involved.
