I shot an event for a stylist friend. A bakery contributed cookies for the event (as a way to promote their business. I took a ton or pictures of their product. The bakery is now interested in...

Replied in White background composite
Yeah, I wondered, because Zack says he's able to do black with the same white paper... but then he has the model standing some 15 feet or more from the background. Unfortunately, the space I'll be...

Replied in Thanks!
I have the v1 580EX's, so would have to spring for the $15 optical slave attachments. No biggie.

Replied in White background composite
Wow! Simple and really effective. I like the slight reflection off the plexi, too. Really, really nice, and I'm all for whatever reduces time spent working in Photoshop.
What stands are...

Replied in is this kit okay?
Ah, that's what that button is for! That's really helpful and good to know. I think that optical sensors can be added to speedlights for cheap, too.
I had somehow gotten the notion that I'd...

Replied in is this kit okay?
Thanks, Jeff. I wasn't aware that all monolights have a built-in optical slave... looking at a photo of the back of the Interfit Stellar X, I see no switch for that (or is it enabled automatically...

Replied in what about this (used) kit as an option?
Just found this on a local Craigs List ad:
2 600w Interfit Stellar X series strobe lights (a year old)
2 light stands (westcot, I believe)
2 shoot thru umbrellas

Created thread is this kit okay?
I'd finally settled on a decision to buy an Einstein, PCB softbox & grid, Manfrotto stand, and Cyber Commander + CyberSync triggers for my first home studio lighting kit (maternity, newborns,...

Created thread softbox shape: rectangular vs. octagonal
I'm not partial to either round or square catch lights in subjects' eyes... both work fine for me. So, with that consideration out of the way, when shooting portraits (maternity, newborns,...

Replied in and the CyberSyncs are compatable with just about anything...
Well, at least while working with just the two Canon speedlights and umbrellas, the ST-E2 on camera works fine in studio: I've never had it fail to trigger the flashes.
I'll wait on the CC units...

Replied in Start with what you have and ad more later.
Thanks, David. I really appreciate that point of view, and think it would be wise to maybe start with a couple of shoot-through umbrellas and experiment a bit. I already have a stand, a...

Replied in Softbox quality...
Thanks again, Joseph.
For my purposes (always indoor studio lighting), the PCB 30x60 box should suffice. I'll get it with the grid. And you've sold me on the CC unit as well. That plus a...

The Photek box doesn't take a grid either, unfortunately (just checked at B&H). I have nice 12-foot high ceilings to work with.
Joseph: what softbox + grid combination would you recommend for...

Wow, Jeff--thank you so much! Really helpful, especially the photos you provided.
Do you use a grid with this softbox?
As for the cheaper transmitters... these attach okay to regular...

Very helpful, Joseph. Thank you very much (also have appreciated your many helpful posts in this forum, from which I've learned a lot).
I will look into the Manfrotto's and using a softbox +...

I want to start shooting portraits (mainly maternity and newborns) in a make-shift studio (my living room) with my Canon 20D's. There's a good amount of natural light from north- and east-facing...
