  • If you are a pro, I'd suggest you buy the Mac with the fastest possible processor and the largest possible SSD. It will cost the mostest, of course, but if you're a pro you can write it all off ...
  • Replied in A few boids
I do the same with a F* 300 f4.5 and the 1.4x converter. The IQ of my shots is just as good as yours. But I can't say the same for the rest of it. Yours are way more interesting.
  • Chicago Botanic Garden, Glencoe, Illinois.
  • I use my Tamron 90mm with a Pentax 1.4x HD converter, giving me an effective 126mm macro. Distance from lens to subject is the same, but the image is larger. I can't tell the difference in ...
  • The combo will do just fine for your budget. I use a 1.4x with a F* 300mm f4.5 and it's great for birding. Kind of heavy, though.
  • Rolls-Royce budget? Buy the 560. Chevy beater budget? Buy the 1.4x and use it with the F* 300. That's what I do. Sharp, sharp, sharp, lovely color. Weighs a bit, but what the hell.
  • Replied in Nice pics!
That's one big reason I've stuck with Pentax all these years instead of going over to Canon or Nikon. I have a dozen Super-Takumars from MX/ME Super/KX days, and they always perform well.
  • My old 55-300 has never let me down. I'll hold on to my wallet for a while longer. Thanks to all for the advice.
  • Created discussion thread 55-300 vs. 55-300
I have just sung the praises of the older 55-300 on another thread. But now that the price of the newer 55-300 WR HD has come down to $264 at B&H . . . Is the newer one's IQ better than the older? ...
  • I've got a F* 300 f4.5, the sharpest lens I own, but my go-to lens for birding is the 55-300. Why? Budget (which a lot of commenters seem to ignore). And because the 55-300 is MUCH lighter than ...
  • I second the motion on the inexpensive Brother laser printers. Mine is now almost five years old and still soldiering on, after three new cartridges and one drum replacement.
  • I often combine a Pentax 1.4x teleconverter with a F* 300mm f4.5. Sharp, sharp, sharp. Heavy, though. A much lighter 1.4x plus 55-300 is not quite as sharp, but more than acceptably sharp at f8 or f9.
  • John AG, was your reply toward my original post, or CeeDee's post just above your reply? Here is the original uncropped and undigested photo. It's a JPG because DPReview doesn't seem to allow raw ...
  • Continuing the experimentation: I ran this through Poster Edges in Photoshop Elements 12. Not quite ready for prime time, but interesting nonetheless.
  • What excellent ideas. I'm going to try them all. The shot was taken at 8 in the morning with the sun behind the bird. I did open up the shadows quite a bit in Lightroom, but that will go only so far. ...
  • Thanks, Mike. Next time I'll have the presence of mind to note the background and open up the aperture to about f4 or 5.6.
  • Thanks. This is another frame, cropped vertically, with a little softening of the background using the radial filter in Lightroom. Better?
  • Created discussion thread Too much going on in this photo?
K-3 with 90mm Tamron macro plus 1.4x Pentax extender, photo cropped by about 3/4ths. Would desaturating the colors help?
  • The names of many creatures in Israeli zoos are preceded with "Palestine" or "Palestinian" and nobody complains. The Palestinian Sunbird is the English name most commonly associated with the ...
  • Whoops. Just discovered one can get rid of that nag window in Lightroom Preferences. Just head east on the list and click on Lightroom Mobile, then Delete All Data.
