Regular cameras (non-smartphone variety) are simply becoming niche products for people who are looking to get more than your regular snapshot. Bokeh, ultra long zoom, ultra wide angle, extreme low light performance, bulb shooting, etc.
Most folks don't need all that but were forced to buy regular cameras in the past because their phones weren't up to the task until fairly recently.
keeponkeepingon: Nice review but.....
where are the full res test scenes?
Early in the review you state that the large mp pixel count is "no gimmick". If that's true, then where are the test scene samples shot at the full no gimmick resolution?
You are comparing a 40mp camera against 8mp cameras and you gimp the 40mp camera by making it shoot in 8mp?
What the heck? How's this help us decide between an iphone 5 and a pureview if you only provide the pureview samples at iphone resolution?
In your opinion zodiacfml, what camera (enthusiast, DSLR, etc.) comes closest to the image quality of the Pureview?
Great idea, great website! Looking forward to a mobile version of the site, or better yet an app.
I wished they'd also mentioned what cameras were used over those 30 years. :-)
Charles Laigo: Not that it really went away (only died down a bit), but is the megapixel race now back with a vengeance?
Oh I do understand how oversampling works. But I think the "41 Megapixles = better" message might easily be co-opted by marketing departments to reboot the race.

Sadly the "10x larger than before" apparently only applies to iPhones. 4th Gen iPod Touch users are still stuck with the native 720x720 resolution. I was expecting some sort of image interpolation. Oh well, still a fantastic app for the price of FREE.
It would be interesting to see if those additional 2 megapixels, up from the S95's 10, will translate into enhanced image quality. I hope the decision was made based on a perceived performance improvement and not solely for marketing/sales purposes.
