For ISO1,600 the noise is great but the overall photo became too soft like somebody added a huge anti-noise dose to the photo.

d800 in this situation: meter the lighted end of this room and then pull the shadows up in post ( can regain up to 2.5 - 3 EV with little little noise introduced )

mkIII in this situation: HDR?

I think this is a good candidate for in-camera HDR testing, and for a good RAW elaboration as well.
I'm curious to see how much of the highlights/shadows (depending on the exposure that was performed, in this case mostly highlights, obviously) can be recovered in raw processing.

It's pixel sharp ... if I view at 50%. When will camera manufacturers switch to a less deadly "sharpening" method?

Cool pad. Interesting selection of books and A/V stuff, per detail in earlier shot. Oh, very tight grain too for 1600 ISO.
