1) This appears to be the most impressive iso from a point and shoot.
2) Stop comparing to Pro DSLRs, the iso is impressive, but keep your mouth off the koolaid.
3) It is better than your D60's iso. It has a whole new chip/processer.
4) The real excitement is that this is a point and shoot, can you imagine how awesome the 5D Mark X or III will be!
5) Now I might have a reason to sell one of my 5D Mark II's

ISO 12800 is impressive!! I wish if there were possiblity to change the lens like the sony NEX, that would be big hit

Surely you guys below are just being sarcastic?? Come on people, this emperor does not have any clothes on. This is just a super agressive and kind-of intelligent noise reduction algorithm doing its thing. Even at lower magnifications it looks like a water painting after a mild shower. As one should expect: no fine detail, some retention of borders hence an illusion of sharpness after heavy noise reduction, in short - no better than other similar sized sensors out there.

Can you think of any APS-C class camera that even comes close to this level of high ISO capability?! Nikons very own D7000 / D5100 genuinely look like water (or oil if your prefer) paintings from ISO 6400 onwards... just not done by a very good artist... Blame it on superior sensor design & fabrication or algorithmic NR at its best... the end results are still spectacular... and thats a fact.

I think this is a very respectable performance at ISO 12,800. Even if it were 'only' as good as other APS-C sensors, it would still be remarkable. The point is, can you find another large sensor camera out there with comparable compactness and a comparable zoom range?

The closest is the Panasonic GX1 (with the X kit lens) but I believe this high ISO image quality trumps the GX1 by quite a significant margin... Ofcrouse we are talking purely about high ISO image quality here. The GX1 brings with it other strengths such as AF speed, etc.

really? But you have noticed that this cam is able to deliver even low-contrast details in SHADOWS in these images (the patterns on the columns). That is a little marvel, and in that package size??? show me anything that is even CLOSE!

You can see some blotchiness, but that's pretty impressive for that ISO, still lots of detail present. It's a shame the lens is so slow, though.

Canon, I take my hat off to you, and this is coming from a Nikon user/fan! Nikon went with the stupid 1 Series cameras when everyone was crying for larger sensors and better high ISO performance --Canon listened and delivered. Who knows may be this will be my travel camera!

1 series might still have their merit (not their current offerings though). With slightly smaller sensor, they could accomodate significantly faster lens, in a very similar package, thus negating to some significant degree the need for bigger sensor.

They would need to provide some of the Gx ergonomy, though. ATM, this cam looks like a clear winner for ANYTHING but the serious DSLRs- if only things like operational speed (autofocus, shot-to-shoot times, etc) are on par with it's sensor quality

I applaud Canon; taking a gamble against the stream of micro 3/4ths and coming out tops. I have found my camera. The 7D still has a place for me, I suppose. But this, THIS, is my camera.

No, I don't think it's as good as the D4. It's way less blotchy, the grain is finer. Plus, consider that with the GX, you're looking at f/5.6, whereas with the Nikon, you could potentially be shooting the same scene 2-3 stops faster depending on the lens, meaning you could shoot in the same light at ISO 1600-3200, potentially (of course, with less DOF though).

I do think the Canon does very well here, but it's more limited.

I guess pricing on the J1 and some discounting will keep it safe, but yeah the V1 w the kit lens is only a whisper behind this (or the same once you buy the flash), and more expensive w the twin kit.

I love the image quality at ISO 6400 & 12800. I'm not saying the IQ is great at pixel level scrutiny, but it definitely better than just about every other APS-C camera out there... including my nikon D5100... which i thought was the best, until now...

Are these direct OOC JPEGs? Wow, very impressive. Better than my 60D in these high ISOs. Also pay attention to DR that they are pretty good - highlight headroom and shadow noise. I have a confident in the new generation of Canon sensors!

These shots do look really good! Even better in RAW I would think.
If the lens stands up to scrutiny it may be worth picking up.
