Fiery Angels Kiss the Sky
Fiery Angels Kiss the Sky

Few people shoot sunsets. And the ones that try often fail. Why is that so? One tends to think that the colours of the blazing sky are enough to make a good picture. But far from it. Always choose a point of interest apart from the sky! In this case I chose that post-like thing on the left, which gives the image a tranquility and serenity it wouldn't otherwise possess.

Like flowers, you cannot possibly take enough pictures of the moon. The moon offers infinite potential for creativity. I dare say no two moon shots look the same. Shooting the moon from time to time with an appropriately small aperture (the moon is a very large object, requiring enormous depth of field - translating into a small aperture) also reminds you to clean your sensor.

Flowers are beautiful. Stock agencies can't get enough of pictures like these. That's why you should take as many of them as possible. The best thing: they don't require much effort or skill on your part. Just make sure some part of the flower is in focus. It's best to choose a smaller aperture to achieve that effect (in this photo I chose F10 and the flower is in focus as you can see - the background doesn't matter). The rest will take care of itself.

A useful technique to reduce unwanted flare when shooting into the sun is to use your left hand to block the sunlight. If applied properly it also adds a subtle vignetting effect that will considerable improve the look of your image.
The Whaler's Dues
The Whaler's Dues

I tried to capture my ambivalent feelings towards whale hunting in this image. The red signifies the whale blood spilled and the carnage that is part of nature's relentless force of destruction and renewal, the blue signifies water, the element that ties it all together and the hope of brotherhood between animal and human being. Peace.
