Portraits From the Holy Land: Ethiopian Orthodox Priest
Taken on: Mar 18, 2011
This Ethiopian Orthodox priest seemed incredibly dignified. The Ethiopian Orthodox are sort of the poor cousins of the rest of the Christian denominations, having been relegated to a small chapel on the roof of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. If you ask me, that is the best place to be!

Portraits From the Holy Land: Keeper of the Greek Orthodox Church
Taken on: Mar 18, 2011
This is the doorman at the Greek Orthodox Church in the Kidron Valley, between the Old City of Jerusalem & the Mount of Olives. He is a very venerable soul. I love the way his deep blue eyes mesh with the background colors. His stare in this image is very intense.

Portraits From the Holy Land: Ultra Orthodox Jew in Mea Shearim
Taken on: Mar 18, 2011
Mea Shearim is a neighborhood in Jerusalem. It is another world altogether, where the Chassidic sects of Judaism predominate. It is a fascinating place. The Chassidim generally don't like to have their picture taken and will look away, particularly the women and children. If one tries photographing them on a Saturday, they will get quite upset. I tried to be as unobtrusive as possible, and most of my images show them distracted or looking some other way.
