During the 14th Century, the Ottomans had surrounded Constantinople on land, but the city's fleet kept it supplied by sea. So, in 1452, 58 years after his great grandfather had built a fort on the Asian side of the Bosporus, the 21 year old Mehmed II built this fort on the European side of the Bosporus in 4 months, cutting off the city's supplies, in preparation for his conquest of the city the next year.
