Canon Photo paper smelling like fish?

I've ordered a print sample from a BJC-8500 figuring that Canon would get off their a** and print out photos on photo paper and not hi res paper (the BJC-8200 Info packet). Now for some reason the paper smells like dead fish or something resembling dead fish. You have to hold your nose to the paper to smell it but whats with that?

Is it with every Canon glossy photo paper or is it with the Canon High Gloss Photo Film?

I love the prints on the photo film though and even if you are'nt going to buy a BJC-8500 for what ever reason you have to request a sample pack from canon just to see the paper and pictures on it. I'd say Canons got a winner with the 8500 and the 6 color printing and 1200x1200DPI but what bothers me is the $1500 price tag for it.

Anyone have any idea why this happens and if it will stop?

From what I've read, the coating on a lot of these glossy papers is gelatin based. That could get smelly I guess.

Re: Canon Photo paper smelling like fish?

I have the Canon BJC-8200 printer and use the Canon Photo Paper Pro exclusively. I've printed out over 100 prints using more than five packets of paper and had NO funny smelling photos.

I have even pressed my nose to the prints that are a couple months old and they don't smell. No, I don't have a cold!

Re: Canon Photo paper smelling like fish?

The paper they send the photos on is very nice it seems like a plain white sheet of paper and on top of it is a thin piece of plastic (coating).
The paper smells like fish or rotten fish.
It's funny because I have never smelled this with any paper.

I guess the more exotic the paper the more smellier it is.

Maybe you shouldn't fillet fish on your printer paper, dude.

Re: Canon Photo paper smelling like fish?

I am VERY impressed with the Canon High Gloss Photo Film. This paper may smell like fish but jesus it resists water like crazy. Also attempting to print on the paper with my HP 932c has resulted in colors running out the wazzu. This paper is very water resistant and I've tried with hot water and I dont mean luke warm coming out of the faucet I mean full fleged hot water coming from the hot water heater at about 100+ degrees. If Canon can make this kind of quality of a print out on this sort of film then jesus I might as well go for the Canon BJC-8200.

My mistake printed on the front side where Canon originally printed has resulted in locked in pictures. The quality is superb with the HP printer and no ink streaking and the pictures come out water proof right from the printer.
