D810 Metering Mode Selector

I'm ready to take the plunge & get a D810.  I have a question to D810 owners:  It seems that the metering mode selector (to change between spot, matrix & center weighted) is gone.  I have the D800 & often rely on this handy selector.  Do you have to change via the menu now?  If so, how easy/quickly can you do this?

Thanks,

MB

It's still there: right most button on top of the shooting mode selector dial (left hand of body).

Actually this is the one annoying thing about the D810, at least for me. I find the button on the top left VERY inconvenient to use, I can't do it at eye level without putting the camera down when I've got a heavy lens like the 80-400VR on. And shooting birds, I often change from matrix to spot to center depending on the situation. Unfortunately, Metering Mode is also not one of the functions you can assign to the preview or FN button...at least not completely. (In other words, it would be perfect if you could assign it with a press + command dial turn--but you can't, as far as I can tell.)

You can, however, assign one mode at a time to the FN and the Preview buttons. So right now I've got spot assigned to the FN and Center-weighted to the Preview. Unfortunately if I want to use Highlight-weighted, I'm out of luck! I'm hoping they might add this in a firmware update--it would seem easy to have it as an custom option for one of the buttons.

It used to be a mechanical dial with a lock. Now it is an electronic selector.

Probably good so that we can assign it to another button and also so it can be selected via software/remotely. Good move.

I had to get used to the position as well but I can't understand what you mean. You can see your type of metering modus in the viewfinder.

So what I mean, you don't have to take your eye from the viewfinder.

Edit: sorry, now I understand what you mean - yes indeed in that case, a non supported (mono/tripod) lens you need to reposition your hand to do an easy switch.

In addition, you can also set up the AE-L/AF-L buttom for instant metering for a most used alternative. It will also be alternating the metering mode between whatever you have selected in the offical left side buttom and the instant access metering you have set up at the AE-L/AF-L buttom. Menu option f6 for that.
